I was so struck by the language and sound of this story, that I sometimes forgot to pay attention to the story itself, and would have to go back and read sections again. I just know I'm going to want to go back and examine and reflect on sections again. Such a creative and unique story.
I highly recommend this book. Full of short stories, poems, and thoughts that are sad and delightful - I felt as though the author allows southerners to catch a glimpse of what it is like to live in Cambridge Bay.
Tanya Tagaq paints a vivid portrait of teenage Northern life, seamlessly interweaving biography and fantasy. The story meanders around an incredibly compelling narrative that paints the main character as heroic and demonic at the same time... human. I will feel this book in my bones for a long time to come, her words are so visceral and alive. Tagaq's reading of the book is beyond exceptional. She adds throat singing and emotion to bring the story to life. Loved it!
Split Tooth is one of the most jarring audiobooks I have ever listened to.
I have mixed feelings about this book- primarily because I didn't understand it. Tagaq's writing is extremely lyrical and magical. However, I was so intrigued and wanted to continue reading even if I didn't really understand some parts. It was brutal and difficult to read, but I'm glad to have read it since it opened my eyes to so many things.
I don't know much about Inuit culture or life in Nunavut, but reading this has made me interested in learning more! That's my main takeaway from this book and one of the reasons I enjoyed the book as much as I did. I loved the parts where she described life in her town, the culture, and the struggles. I definitely want to read more books set in Nunavut now so I can continue to learn.

These foxes will die of starvation; better to put them out of their misery. These foxes will harm schoolchildren; better to put them out of their misery. These humans will destroy the earth; better to put them out of their misery.
I'm not sure how to describe Split Tooth. If you've heard Tagaq's music, this is that, written. I'm not much for poetry. The narrative weaves somewhere between diary, dreams and drama. But when this book clicks, it hits like gunfire.
Simply incredible.
It's a part memoir, mixed with folklore, mixed with a coming-of-age story, and bound together by mythology, 1970s culture, religion, birth, violence, snow and ice...
The writing style is what really elevates it. Prose, poetry and illustrations are all woven together to tell the narrative, and create something completely unique.
I can't recommend it enough.

This is more poetry than novel and that kind of head spaxs was hard to get into at first. Tagaq writes very rhythmically and blends mythology into reality in a seamless way that gives everything a sureal feeling.
The audiobook has some throat singing at the end of each chapter and at the speed I was listening to it gives the book a bit of a horror vibe, at about 1.5x it sounds normal. So, fast listeners beware it was a bit of a jump scare at 2.25x.
