The more I read of the Gunslinger series, the more I like it. It is by far my favourite Stephen King work, and I am going to be very, very sorry to read the last page of the last volume. Roland Deschain in particular is a character that fascinates me. All of the "Western" elements of the story, a genre that I don't pay much attention to, actually make the whole work richer and more detailed. The characters feel fuller, more developed. Like all King protagonists, the gunslingers are seriously flawed, but none so much as Roland. Also, in this particular volume, extending the story of Father Callahan from 'Salem's Lot actually ties in the work to King's significant output of work and you're left wondering how many other references he's included. Like I said, I can't wait to finish it, but I'm going to hate the fact that it'll be over.
Excellent! Some have told me that the final 3 books of the Dark Tower series were not as good as the first four but I honestly didn't see any diminution of the story line. This is a true Dark Tower book with it's genre blending mix of American Western, Urban Fantasy, Horror and High Fantasy elements and living, breathing characters. On to the next book.
The 5th book of King's "Dark Tower," probably the most focused and coherent tales since the first book. The suspense built around the mysterious "wolves" (raiders who wear wolf masks) is enjoyable, although I think the answers to the mysteries are a bit predictable.

It took me so long to get through this book. I want to continue on the journey with Roland and his ka-tet but this one was a struggle for me. I read it in stages but it felt like a chore. It is essentially one long side-quest. Glad I finally finished it. But I do feel like it could have been cut in half and still been an effective bridge to the next part of the story. That said, I’m excited to finally get to book 6. Let the adventures commence!

Although this is not my favorite in the series, it is in the top three. It has been years since I read this series and it was almost like reading it again the first time. There were so many important plot points that I had forgotten. I had forgotten Mia and Father Callahan and so many others that played such a large part in this novel. Although the tet makes small progress for the tower in this novel, it is mostly about bringing closure to Callahan's story and exactly what the title says, defending from the Wolves of Calla Bryn Sturgis.

Expressing how much I love Stephen King's universe and the road to the Dark Tower is not a task I can manage. It's just magic!
As I've noted before, the Dark Tower series is one of the best I've read. I think Wolves of Calla is a solid mid-adventure story for the series. It's essentially an interruption of the ka-tet's journey along the Path of the Beam toward the tower, as they come upon the town of Calla Ben Sturgis and agree to help them fight a villainous invasion of "wolves" who come to steal the town's children and bring them back to the town "roont", or mentally handicapped.
It's a fun, exciting and engaging story that tells us a lot about the characters without slowing the action. This is probably the only DT novel I could imagine someone picking up as a standalone and actually enjoying. I still think it's best not to, though.

that was sooooo good - the last one hundred pages or so I couldn't stop from smiling. the last 50 pages or so are absolutely brilliant. i have to go back and reread 'salem's lot at some point also.
