My reasons for reading this book seemed a bit suspect to me. I had only picked it up because friends of mine had just been in Greece (is that a rationale for reading something?) and I have an interest in leprosy. I know, that is a bit weird, but I have been curious about Hansen's disease since childhood.

So, I read some reviews. I did not find them to be compelling, but figured what was one more book for our vacation. My husband expects a heavy box of books.

I am so glad I went on to read this. It fulfilled my expectations of a good book. I got transported to a place I have never been (or will go); I learned a whole lot about Crete World War II and leprosy and I found the characters fascinating. If you read to be transported, to meet new people or learn new things, I highly recommend this story.

I liked this book so much more than I expected. I don't read historical fiction often, or at all really, and I received this book as a gift from a friend who's from Crete. It's not a book I would have picked out myself, but I was curious because I visited Crete just last year and well, if my friend gave it to me, I must at least give it a chance. And I was not disappointed! I thought it was a touching story against an interesting time period. I knew next to nothing about leprosy, and although I wouldn't call myself an expert now, I know more than I did before. The only thing I didn't like so much was the present-day story, it lacked depth and I don't think it adds much to the book. Still, I could hardly put the book down. I have some other historical fiction books lined up to read now, thanks to this one.

Beautiful story

This tale beautifully depicts the coming of age of four generations of women. The heartbreak, the healing, the love is all palpable in each of their stories!

A wonderful historical fiction novel. Alexis' venture to find the truth of her mother's sister is an incredible tale with a fascinating deep dive into leprosy and how these people were treated for decades in Greece.

Highly recommend.

The premise of this story is great. it's definitely a family saga, and is intriguing. Some of the detail is a bit much but all in all it's a good story!
