I’ve never been more excited to be done reading a book, than I was with this one. I’m no longer even excited to see the movie. The amount of characters (with Norwegian names that are nearly impossible to keep straight) and plot twists is excessive. Character growth is minimal, described in varying ways throughout the book that regardless, end up being portrayed on a superficial level - at best. The best thing I can say about this book is that, it’s over.

My first Jo Nesbo novel. Pretty good page turner thriller but lacking the depth of other more classic scandy thrillers like Girl with dragon tattoo. An OK read with some great individual moments

I'm developing a fascination for Norwegian crime novels. This was my first Harry Hole and I'm in love. A serial murderer is on the loose, nicknamed "The Snowman" because he erects snowmen in the victims' yards. Very eerie, the snowman was facing the house, with the victim's pink scarf around it's neck (if snowmen had necks...) It's all very serious and dark and twisted. The characters have LOTS of issues (not just the murderer). Well-told story, and even though it's #8 in the series, I felt like I really got great insight into Hole's character (brilliant police inspector).

This is one of the best crime books I’ve read, at least recently. The pacing is perfect and nothing really seems out of place. There aren’t any superfluous descriptions or characters. It was a little much, I think, how many different viewpoints he wrote from since they were only used for like several scenes. Almost everything seemed natural and plausible without being cheesy

Pretty interesting! I was surprised by so many references to American pop culture--some were quite random! I will never see a snowman in quite the same way again!

Another complicated plot. Nesbo doesn't waste a scene in this - they all have something to add to the series

Oh boy, what a terrific read this was! It's not the first Harry Hole novel, but it's the first I read, and I don't think I lost out by not having read the prior books (not all of which are translated into English anyway). It's a police procedural, with Hole on the trail of a possible serial killer as he investigates a series of disappearances going back to 1980. It's relentlessly creepy and fast-paced, with a great cast of suspects. I had my suspicions about the outcome very early on, and I turned out to be right, but that didn't spoil the ride one bit. Fans of modern noir, the novels of Stephen King and the films of David Fincher and Christopher Nolan should all be heartily satisfied. I look forward to reading more from Nesbo.

Read as a result of seeing his work on the BBC Four documentary, 'Nordic Noir'.

Definitely a new favourite! A complex and bizarre whodunit, extremely gruesome at some points. I was sure I had solved it at three different times, and was proved wrong each time.

The climax is extraordinary and, although part of it requires the reader to suspend more than the average amount of disbelief, tautly written with excellent pace.

He's also very good at a sense of place, especially regarding the differences between Oslo and Bergen, which I had no idea existed.

It is really fun reading this series quickly because Nesbo gets better with every story. I am more aware of the author's tendencies/patterns than typical between books in a mystery series since I can't stop myself from picking up the next one ASAP each time. 4.5 stars (I predict that I'll be driven a 5-er in one of the future books).

Another very good one, totally engrossing. Very last paragraph kind of makes one want to read the next one immediately :|
