I really like this series, I'm listening to them one after another on audible.
***Trigger Warning: Eating disorder mention**
I am only giving this book three stars because I was CONSTANTLY bothered by the number of times Charlette mentions starving herself to ward off maximum chins. It seems that Thomas has decided to make food Holmes' drug of choice, but the time spent focused on Charlette's food restriction was excessive.
I happen to be recovering from an eating disorder and was bothered by this author's choice.
Making food Holmes' drug detracts from this feminist retelling of sherlock holmes.

I will read the rest of the series but I'm disappointed in this one.

Sherry Thomas is moving quickly beyond the traditional Holmesian canon into something quite different and her own. There are a lot of layers to this story and ongoing arcs for characters major and minor as well as some frank discourse about the geopolitics of Victorian England of the sort that rarely comes up in other Holmes stories. Not to mention just a ripping good heist sequence and some long-simmering lust.

I took a break from Lady Sherlock for a couple months to read other stuff, and was excited to dive back in! As usual, the plot mechanics are dizzying and the character development is satisfying. This novel stands in contrast to the first three books in a couple ways. I appreciated that the central mystery was theft, as opposed to yet another grisly murder. There are also new social themes or commentary introduced centering around colonialism and social class.

My one quibble with The Art of Theft is that the plot setup relies on a couple of circumstances that strain credulity..... the crime world is small, but is it really THAT small?

I like the addition of Mrs. Watson’s former love. I missed Sherlock solving simple mysteries. Somehow I get a little lost between the set up and the results. I think it could use some more explaining in between, the last book did that well by looking back and reviewing the things that were going on behind the scenes. Waiting so patiently for Charlotte and Lord Ingram to get together!! And such a lovely start for Livia, hopefully this turns around.
