This comic is so beautiful and the story is so amazing. I am always a little wary of stories by Grant Morrison because they are either awesome or awful. However, I have found in a the recent past that he has been empowering a lot of other smaller atists to create really great things as well, see 18 Days for a great example.

I was pleasently surprised by how action packed and character driven this short series is. Dan Mora draws a stunning piece of art. The main female lead is complex and has a lot of growth and development for having very limited page time. The story and style gave me flashes of Loser's meets the claymation Here Comes Santa Claus.

I highly recommend this story, Christmas or not.

'Klaus' by Grant Morrison with art by Dan Mora is a reimagining of the Santa Claus legend for the superhero age. Consider it "Santa Claus: Year One."

In a snowy ancient city ruled by a cruel Baron, he determines that all the toys should go to his bratty son, who only breaks things. Ex-inhabitant, and soldier, Klaus decides that the children need something in their lives, so with the help of unseen beings in the forest and his wolf Lilli, he sets out to deliver toys to the town. Meanwhile, the Baron is making the men of the city dig deeper and deeper in the mines. He is also hiding something evil in the mines that Klaus will have to battle.

As you can see on the cover, this is a Klaus with a sword and weapons. His muscular arms are the size of tree trunks. He leaps agilely from roof to roof like a character in Assassin's Creed. He battles soldiers and bests them. And yet, the Santa Claus we know and love is here. My favorite scene is when he breaks forth into his signature laugh. I had a great time reading this.

I had to get this through InterLibrary Loan, meaning DPL didn't choose to purchase copies of it. Or, and this is a likely possibility, the book's binding tends to easily fall apart and the copies in the system already got trashed or never returned. Anyway, because Grant Morrison was one of the handful of comic writers who got me deeply into the the medium when I was 22. Ever since, like a lot of other fans, their (Grant's) books have either been really memorable OR so overwhelming and conceptual that I finished and returned it without really understanding what I'd just read, and that's no good.

Klaus, on the other hand, is told in such an understandable action movie x fairy tale style, with well-paced twists, and absolutely stunning, intricate-but-clear illustrations and colors. I really hope there's more of this, and that I can convince my library to buy it.

Reread so I could finally finish the story. This is hands down the best Santa origin story ever, no argument. It only gets better the more you read it.

Side note: The best character in this series is NOT Klaus, but his white wolf Lilli. She’s a badass and saves his a few times.

Damn. That is one fine Klaus ;)

I meant to read this over the holidays but got a little busy. My love for Christmas reaches further than those couple days a year (yes, I AM one of those Christmas music after Halloween people) so reading it ‘late’ is just fine for me.

I really enjoyed this twist on an origin story and the art work was phenomenal!
