There is something about stories of a group of friends in the middle of a crime and figuring out who did it. I cannot get enough! I really enjoyed this book!

This will be a good book to recommend to my mystery-loving students who don't require an action-packed plot but like a contemporary whodunit with characters their age. I liked that the author included interview 'transcripts' and chapters told from the killer's perspective that were interspersed throughout the Kate's narrative. My main issue with this novel is that it was hard to believe that a prosecutor (even from a small town) would allow a high schooler access to confidential legal documents and information, especially relating to a murder of one of her peers. (Teen readers may be less bothered by that since they might see themselves in Kate...) The ending was satisfying, however, and the last few chapters kept me guessing.

(8/10)- Wow. This book really surprised me. My friend recommended it, and since I really like mysteries, I decided to read it, but I didn’t necessarily have high expectations (I did hope that it was going to be really good, though). But this book literally gave me everything I was looking for in a book at the moment. It had a great mystery, which left me wondering who did it until the end, and the result made sense and was well set up. It had romance, and honestly the stakes set up were really good and the relationship felt very real. I’m not sure how accurate the court stuff is, but the author is the daughter of an attorney so I’m pretty sure it’s realistic. It also dealt with some pretty heavy topics in a way that wasn’t offhanded. Some of the foreshadowing was a bit obvious, but it didn’t bug me much. I only have two problems with this book. One is that the main character, while being a very good character, is also pretty creepy sometimes. She literally follows people, but it fits into the story alright so it’s not a big deal. But that reminds me of another tiny problem in the beginning, which is that for some reason Kate runs in to the River Boys every five pages and it’s weird. The other criticism I have is about Shep. He’s a good character, but very inconsistent, since he seems to have two different personalities sometimes and it does bother me a bit. But otherwise, this is an incredibly solid book.

I bought this book for my mum for Christmas or something one year and she told me that I should read it because it was pretty good. So when I finished the book and mentioned this to her, she said she hadn’t even read it, so I have no idea what she was even talking about.

Anyways, I actually thoroughly enjoyed this novel, it was a super interesting concept and I think it was pulled off quite well. I really really liked the fact that the boys didn’t know which one had shot their friend – it kept an air of even more mystery and made for a little bit more of a complication during the investigation.

It was an easy read, I read it in about a day, I guess it was a novel that pulled me back from my reading slump and gave me something that was easily engaging. I thought it was well written in the sense that the mystery of who killed their friend was not as easy to decipher, and the audience found out at exactly the same time as everyone else.

I also did like the context of the story: y’know five rich boys who party and hunt etc, one of them gets killed by another. It was a very real scenario and I enjoyed reading it.

I guess I also liked the relationship between Kate Marino and Shep Moore, it was a nice kind of thing. And just, I don’t know what to say really it was just a nice kind of book.
