These foxes are enchanting and in constant peril. Your heart will break over and over again and you will never feel good about reading Peter Rabbit again.
I hear it all the time from grown-ups, "I just don't like talking animal books." We get it, you're grown, and you don't want to be seen crying over dead spiders, or artistic apes, or mouse knights. So, don't pay attention to this review.

I've read this one twice, and it's a spooky middle grade book that follows foxes. It's told in a series of short stories, but it follows the same characters through all the stories. I personally didn't find it particularly scary but I am also not the target audience, and I found it an enjoyable book nonetheless.

It is one of the best books I have ever read. I got this read to though (by 4th grade teacher) because it’s a little more challenging words.
Kids love horror (hello Goosebumps!) and this book was full of chills and scares a plenty with a really unique twist: it starred two fox kit protagonists and featured almost zero human characters! The one exception to the “No Humans” policy was a horrifying version of (of all people) Beatrix Potter?! I found that section a tad gonzo, but the rest by turns charming and suitably scary. Other villains included rabies, a swamp monster and, most disturbing of all, one of the characters’ murderous father who also kind of stood in as a cult leader/bigamist as well. Basically, there was a lot going on, but I could see small horror-fans loving it.

The end kind of fizzled out for me but otherwise an excellent scary book for kids. I'd recommend this to those who don't mind gore.

The suspense and eeriness of this book kept me wanting to read more and more! A super fun, campfire sort of spooky tale with a great ending. There are a few animal deaths, injuries, and violence against animals , so considering that and the genre, it definitely needs to be recommended to young readers who like scary stories and are okay with the above. But for kids that love horror, this is an awesome read!
