Gil Adamson’s love of poetry comes through in her writing. I like her use of language but sometimes the poetic phrasing gets a little excessive. The story is a decent adventure of a young woman on the run through the Canadian wilderness with few skills and no preparation for survival. She meets up with a few interesting characters along the way who help her to survive as she attempts to elude her pursuers. Though the story takes place in Canada, I never got a sense of the place, as it could have happened in any cold area. This was a little disappointing. Actually, I was more drawn to her next book “Ridgerunner”, but felt I might appreciate it more by reading this book first since they seemed to be closely related. Looking forward to reading more from Adamson.

Interesting and compelling read. I'm not sure exactly what I liked so much about it, which isn't very helpful. I liked the interior dialogue of characters that was interesting without being tiresome. I liked the combination of the abstract "the widow," "the wife," "the preacher" with very specific and believable characters. I liked the dreamy lyricism and fairy tale like quality, and that Adamson didn't really feel any need to explain to me how or why the widow is crazy and why she murdered her husband. Overall a very well crafted story.

The urgency of the main character in this book being pursued immediately grabbed me, and the writing is wonderfully descriptive, although a bit of a slog to get through at times. However, I was disappointed that the reader is so disconnected from the widow as the main character, and didn't feel that I got to know what sort of a person she was by the end of the book. And I was conflicted by the ending; I initially liked the romantic notion that the widow went off on her own, but the practical side of me did not care for such an implausible ending.

Honestly, I have such an aesthetic aversion to Westerns that 3.5 is pretty freaking good. Read for class and while I do find it a really rich text for discussion (I even wrote an 8 page essay on it), for actual enjoyment, it didn’t really do that much for me. Most of the middle part was a bit dull, I think 50-100 pages could have been cut and accomplished the same thing. The feminism is a bit outdated and lil essentialist, so it’s better to read from an informative perspective. I liked it and I do think the writing was absolutely gorgeous, but it certainly is going out of my brain once this class is over.
