Not a huge fan of the flowery writing style, but the message couldn't be more relevant in current times.

One of my coworkers told me I was on a banned books kick since I read Fahrenheit 451 after reading The Handmaids Tale lol, and I honestly really enjoy that.
The plot of this book was at times hard to follow, but for a short dystopian novel, I think that's natural. The message came through very clear, though. Censorship and banning of written commentary and challenging beliefs is a dangerous game. It was dark and sad, but also hopeful at the end for a new beginning.
And to think that this book shows up on banned book lists...

Un libro que espero todo el mundo tenga la oportunidad de leer.

Ok, so I’m not gonna pretend that I’m super smart, and try to analyze this in a new or profound way. I honestly picked this to read because I’ve challenged myself to read one classic every month, and I saw the audibook was under 6 hours.
With that being said, I did enjoy the story and see why it has become a classic. I thought the commentary on censorship was witty and interesting way. It also made me think about how obsession to technology can lead to an abandoning of community.
Some moments did become a bit repetitive, but overall the story moved along quickly. I liked seeing Montag’s progression and resistance to the status quo.
Nice and short. Feels like it was written just a few years ago (from a 2023 perspective) and is a (sadly) very likely future.

This book is really uniquely written in a way I don’t know how to describe. It’s very fast-paced while also taking its time in its descriptive elements. It’s kind of jarring, even uncomfortable, but I’m not so sure that’s bad. It was almost like the book was hot. I could only read in short sessions, but a lot happened in those stints. Entire books could (and probably have) been written on the prescient symbolism. In this respect, it’s hard not to compare it to 1984, to which I feel this book is more effective and relatable. I found it difficult to read, but quite glad I did.
"so! a book is a loaded gun in the house next door. burn it. take the shot from the weapon. breach man's mind...there was no longer need of firemen for the old purposes. they were given the new job, as custodians of our peace of mind, the focus of our understandable and rightful dread of being inferior; official censors, judges, and executors. thats you, montag and that's me."
swarming. burning. drowning.
"'they don't know that this is all one huge big blazing meteor that makes a pretty fire in space, but what some day it'll have to hit. they see only the blaze, pretty fire, as you saw it.'"
to what do you owe others? do you acknowledge the deep burning in your chest, suffocating on the smoke? what do you do when everything you know is turning to ash? the only color that separates the monotonous grey is the smouldering embers of a life destroyed. what's your place in the destruction?
"we need to be really bothered once in a while. how long is it since you were really bothered? about something important, about something real?"
knowledge is power. remembering is sacred. history cannot be erased. community is incendiary.
