Makenna the loner and Ryan the man of few words.
Loved both the MCs and even though this author's writing is becoming more formulaic, I still thoroughly enjoyed the story. Makenna volunteers for the same lone shifter shelter that saved her life when she was just a cub. It's here that she rescues Ryan's cousin and connects the two. Now the Phoenix pack is aware of the shelter and learns to overcome their prejudice against lone shifters. Ryan is a tall dark broodingly quiet sex on a stick kinda guy. But he is not apposed to finding his mate, and it doesn't take long for him to realize that Makenna is meant for him. Now the hard part is to convince her of that fact. Although she doesn't truly believe it, she isn't going to turn away a good thing like Ryan. Now if only she can get him to smile... So most of the conflict comes from the bad-guy, who is pretty creepy. As usual, the bad guy is over the top bad, but the intrigue was pretty good in this one and kept me on my toes listening to it. The audio reader, Jill Redfield is very good!
The ending was perfect!
I look forward to Dominic's story some day.

3.5 stars. This was another good addition to this fun series! This was the story of Ryan, an enforcer for the Phoenix Pack, and Makenna, a lone wolf that works at a shelter for other lone wolves. Makenna works with homeless loners, especially women and children that have been abused and are on the run or were banished from their packs. One homeless boy, fourteen year old Zac, shows up and Makenna searches for his family to see if he can be rehomed in a new pack. She finds that Ryan Connor is his uncle. Ryan, and the rest of his pack, are skeptical of trusting loners, because they have a bad reputation for being hired killers or criminals. But Ryan feels a connection to Zac, and Makenna, right away. Ryan feels a responsibility to prtect Zac and have him join the Phoenix Pack. Gradually Ryan spends time with Zac, with Makenna along as chaperone/caketaker, and Zac begins to feel comfortable with joining the pack. After spending time together, Makenna and Ryan start to realize they like each other and Ryan thinks they are mates. But Makenna is skeptical. She is used to being a lone wolf and and she doesn't think she feels the mating bond. She really likes Ryan though. She wants him to be her mate, but she is worried that if he is not that Ryan will leave her. There is some drama with a rival pack who wants to take over the shelter. They cause trouble with the council, anti-shifter extremists and almost get the shelter closed down, but everything works out ok in the end. Ryan is determined to have Makenna accept him as his mate and finally their bond is cemented.
I don't think I liked this book as much as a few of the others, mainly because of the fact that Ryan was so much the strong silent type and not very vocal about his feelings. Makenna also fought the fact that she may be Ryan's mate because of her insecurity about being a lone wolf. It made it hard for me to feel a connection between them. But I did eventually feel it and I did enjoy the story. It was fun to catch up with the other members of the pack too. Overall, it was a good story and I enjoyed the book!

I enjoyed the change of setting and new characters at the shelter, but the smut was too close to noncon for me, with both of them saying they didn't want to do specific things and the other person doing it anyway. It's implied that they both want it, but the scenes of someone verbally saying 'no' repeatedly and the other person basically saying 'too bad' were too much for me.

We go further into the overall shifter world with this book and I was thrilled about it!! Do I love the compound with the Phoenix pack? Yes of course! But do I love seeing how things work outside of the compound? Absofreakinglutely!
Makenna is a badass with a bleeding heart. She is selfless, determined to connect lone shifters with their families or new packs so they don’t have to suffer the loneliness and feeling of being incomplete like she has. Of course then we have Ryan, the emotionally closed off, tortured soul that has a soft side for kids and for … you guessed it, Makenna. They’re extreme opposites when it comes to faith in fate and belief in superstition, but Makenna can decode his grunts and huffs and they have an instant, undeniable connection even if she is uncertain — Ryan *knows*. He just needs to convince her.
The villain for this story is the perfect love to hate kind of sinister evil and the plot is another “hang on to your hats” kind of rollercoaster of suspense and emotion. The pack dynamics, the shelter dynamics, and the evil hijinks really made this one hard to put down. And like all the others, the steamy scenes are incomparable to other books.

Suzanne Wright's books are always fun. Her writing is a great blend of witty and casual. For example, one of the characters is described as "a peroxide blond who was rather tan-tastic". Her worlds are very cool in terms of equality. There is sexism, but the females don't buy into it and there are several gay characters in other books.
The werewolf world is fairly large and becomes more complex with each book. Savage Urges is about a loner werewolf who volunteers in a shelter for other loners. Makenna grew up there after her mother was killed for fun by a group of falcon shifters. Loners are generally discriminated against because it is believed that they must have committed an awful crime to get thrown out of their pack. Of course, the reality is much more complex than that.
The shelter Makenna volunteers at is being threatened by an Alpha wolf who wants to add the shelter to his territory. Makenna, the shifter who runs the shelter, another volunteer, the hero, and his pack have to jump over many hurdles to save it from him.
I like that Ms. Wright is able to go with so many variations on the true mate theme. This is book five and each book has had a different take on it. In this book the hero, Butch, is certain from the beginning that Makenna is his true mate even though he can't feel the bond. Makenna doesn't buy it. They build a relationship anyway and work to figure out what's blocking the bond if it exists. The two plots are intertwined and there is no jarring feeling as the book goes from one to the other. I thought the action was great and had a lot of trouble putting this book down. In fact, I read it twice before even writing this review.
I recommend this series as well as Ms. Wright's other two series Deep in Your Veins (vampires), and Dark in You (demons).

Struggled with this, the writing wasn’t great and I just didn’t love either character. Ryan was too broody and Makenna was trying too hard to be independent and not need anyone/not admit they were mates. Just felt a bit bored through most of the book and just wasn’t into it
I really liked this book. I liked all the books in this series. They're fun and sweet and sexy, and the characters are quirky and have the most enjoyable conversations. I highly recommend the series, and I hope that Tao, Dominic, and Trick will get their own stories. I look forward to them.
So Ryan never ever smiles? The furthest he goes is 'that almost made him smile'.
