If I had a nickel for every time I read a romance book where a social media savvy girlie goes to a small fishing town & falls in love with the local grumpy fisherman I would have TWO NICKELS… which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice. Not to say this book felt EXACTLY like It Happened One Summer, because it didn’t, but there were enough similarities that I wasn’t particularly hooked as the plot progressed. I was expecting a bigger twist or finale than we got- there’s nothing wrong with a Hallmark movie ending, I just usually like stuff with a little more drama. I really enjoy Amy Lea’s writing style & characters, they are diverse & feel so fresh in a genre that can sometimes get really repetitive. The Canadian slang & quirks are really fun, too. Her romances are sweet & spicy & the perfect little no-brainer refresh. 🩵

Exes and O's was my first read of 2023, it is only fitting that The Catch is one of my last. I have loved this series by Amy Lea so much. Each book is filled with such heart and humor. Nothing beats Exes and O's for me, but it is a close second.

I hadn't previously felt any attachment to Mel (the FMC in this book), but she quickly became a character that endeared herself to me. Evan was also such a joy of a MMC. He was gruff with a heart of gold, which I feel tends to be the preference for book boyfriends these days. His love language is definitely acts of service and it makes the romance that much sweeter because you can tell that he cares about Mel and you see it in his actions.

The plot is not very original and is definitely a variation of things we, as romance readers, have probably read before. This did not take away from my enjoyment of the book, however. It almost made it comforting because it was like I knew what to expect.

Amy Lea has a gift of being able to infuse such personality into her books. Her characters and settings feel alive and I think that is what I love so much about this series. I cannot wait to see where she goes next.

“There is no reality in my mind where I can let you go.”

I’m sorry, but we get a “burly and bearded fisherman?” Excuse me? *screams in excitement cause I was a simp for Brendan Taggert in IHOS* Honestly, the premise of this book is giving IHOS but I’m not complaining since I loved that book so much.

And Canadian points! Oh my god, I’m getting a Canadian version of this book. I need to stop.

Funny enough, Book 1 is on my tbr but here I am starting with Book 3. Nothing is more Kim-coded than that. I now have the other two borrowed though.

Anyways, to the actual book, despite it being basically the same as IHOS, I was attached. I couldn’t put this down. I loved the small-town setting and side characters, the grumpy x sunshine, Mel and Evan’s banter, the fake dating/engagement … *chef’s kiss* I loved them individually and together. I was rooting for them so much.

This book was fun. I enjoyed reading it. There were so many cute moments and I love how they actually had time to develop. My only ick is the third act drama cause it was stupid. They were on a path to resolve that so well until it just had to blow up for five minutes. Like, just use that five minutes to have a conversation but that's too much to ask for ig.

Cute read! It's the first Amy Lea book I've read and I liked it enough that I will certainly read the other books that are a part of the series.

I found the characters loveable and the story a cute one. I love a good fake relationship trope. I do think the characters had some growth, but it felt very surface level and we didn't really dive into how they worked through that growth, which is why it doesn't get a higher star rating from me. Buuuuttt, still so adorable and worth the read.

I thought that I wouldn't love the lens of Mel being an influencer and Evan being a gruff wilderness man - it seemed like that would just be too big of a personality clash for two people to get over. But Amy and Evan just love so fully and completely, and by the end I was truly convinced that they loved each other for who they area. It made the story feel real and genuine.

Love Amy Lea’s writing so much! These characters are lovable and real. The Nova Scotia references were authentic and interesting. Their story is lovely. 4.5 ⭐️
