My One and Only by Kristan Higgins

Over the past two months I've read quite a few Kristan Higgans novels. And while I've had my quibbles with some of them, and the whole I've really enjoyed them (hence why I keep reading them). But this one...

I was doing okay until about halfway through the book, when we finally learn why Harper and Nick got divorced in the first place. And after reading about it, I kind of thought, "Maybe these two really shouldn't be together?" That feeling just got stronger as the book went on. Their communication sucked, and Nick over and over seemed to feel that it was either his way or proof that she didn't love him enough. Plus, I kind of hated them both. The whole "we talk through movies in movie theaters, even after other patrons ask us to be quiet and have to move far away because we're disruptive" thing? Not cute, just hella obnoxious, and made me hate them both a little more.

By the 3/4 mark, I was actively rooting for them to not end up together. "You know what? We have great chemistry, but we actually suck as a couple. Let's cut our losses and move on." But I was still powering through, trying to finish the book because I was already so close, and I kept hoping that maybe they'd redeem themselves in some way. Hoping that Nick would stop being such an ass and expecting Harper to rearrange her entire life and change everything, just because he wanted her to.

And then, 40 pages from the end,
Spoiler Harper accepted a marriage proposal from someone else, because she didn't want to hurt his feelings.
And then I just couldn't take it anymore. And so I gave up on them. And Nick looked at me with his sad, tortured, gypsy eyes, and was disappointed in me, and I did not care.

Even divorce attorneys deserve a second chance at love. Divorce attorney Harper James is heading to her step sisters’ destination wedding. Willa is marrying Chris the half-brother of Harper’s ex Nick and Nick will be there as best man. Harper hasn't seen Nick in 12 years. Due to some computer glitches and some bad weather Harper ends up riding cross country in close quarters with Nick. Maybe this will give them time to clear the air and move on. Or not.
This story was a little different than the other Kristan Higgins stories I've read recently. It is a little darker or more serious. It has its light moments and a truly movie worthy proposal. I really enjoyed it and can’t seem to get enough Kristan Higgins.

This is the second book I've read by Kristan Higgins, and I think I'm becoming a new fan. She excels at character development and that really good slow burn type of romance, which I love. I'm not as big a fan of her brand of romantic comedy, which typically relies on cringe-worthy moments.

As with the previous book of hers I read (Just One of the Guys), the main relationship is contrasted against a bad relationship: specifically one that is lackluster to the point of confusion. Dennis, like the character of Ryan in JOOTG, doesn't seem to care that he's in a relationship with someone he has no passionate feelings for. I've never met anyone like that IRL so I find them unbelievable as characters. I would prefer if the other relationships in the book weren't so obviously wrong and added some complex feelings into the novel.

The main character in this book started out clichéd and annoying, but she became more complex and interesting as it went on. She has major personality flaws which result in disaster. It can be hard to read at times.

But I loved the emotional pull of this book and the satisfying ending, even if the ending felt abrupt. They clearly had a lot of things to work out but we don't get to see them discuss it. Readers only get the summary of what they decided in the epilogue, as though they worked out all their problems like magic.

This is a book that I ended up loving, but for a while I wasn't sure if I was going to make it through. There's a lot of action in the book, which I like, but there was also a lot of background information. Often I found myself wishing we would just get to the present. I appreciated knowing so much about the characters and their backgrounds, but still, I thought it dragged.

Also, the background that I really wanted to know, how Harper and Nick broke up, didn't come until like halfway through the book. This sucked not only because I was dying to know what happened, but also because before then I didn't really like Harper so much. I loved her name, I thought she was funny, but she was kind of a really crazy bitch. And not in a positive way.

There were two things I really loved about this book. First, Nick and Harper's romance. It was so sweet and tragic and sweet and tragic that it just killed me. Their connection was amazing. Second, Harper's dog Coco. I am not an animal person, but I really loved that dog.

Bottom Line: Part of me isn't totally sold on recommending this because it took me so long to get into it, but in the end I did really enjoy it and I was sad when it was over. I think it's definitely worth reading for the romance, just be prepared to have to plow through a lot before you get there.

I find I usually like her style on the first read through the book, but it is not something that I can read again. On a second read it just feels grating. This time I was anticipating that and did find some of the main characters habits annoying enough to draw me out of the story.
