I gave up on this one after about 20% in and after being exposed to probably the 60th non-essential character. My brain was about to explode keeping track of who was related to who, and it seemed that the only point of this was to pay tribute to other characters in the previous 13 books of the series.
Well, that's all well and good for those who care. I don't, and I guess I can blame myself for jumping into her 14th book without having read her before.

I won't read her again. This book reads like a grade 8 effort and breaks most of the rules Stephen King set out in his On Writing book. Namely, the overuse of adverbs. I'm not kidding here: she must have used an adverb for every descriptor of dialogue (King, btw, says anything other than the word "said" after dialogue is useless and trying too hard. Or he said something to that effect). Anyway, it was really annoying and I had to move on before I came to the word "exclaimed" and broke something.
One fun thing I did with my Kindle is search for the occurrence of the word "frowned". 99 times.

Buh-bye.

Did You Miss Me?

When her son is kidnapped, Assistant District Attorney Daphne Montgomery believes it is connected to her latest high profile case, but she and FBI Agent Joseph Carter soon realize that the key to saving Daphne's son may lie in unlocking the secrets of her traumatic past.

Not one of Rose's better efforts. The writing is overly repetitious with Daphne and Joseph's internal musing repeated ad nauseam. Moreover, there is too much telling and not enough showing.

The suspense is lacking tension as the identity of the villain is revealed early on. Moreover, Rose has a problematic tendency of providing her villains with sympathetic motivations even if their actions are diabolical - this is another case in point.

Finally, the romance feels forced. Daphne and Joseph have zero chemistry and their attraction isn't credible.

Unfortunately, this one is more of a miss than a hit. Stevie and Clay's book is next though and I've been looking forward to their story due to the build up. I really hope it lives up to its potential.

You can read more of my reviews at my blog The Book Chick.

I actually gave this a four star rating at first but after I slept on it for a night I found out that it certainly did not deserve that. It is not a bad book really. It is quite complex with a lot of characters and histories, that are woven together until the truth and nothing but the truth is finally out. There are some tears and a lot of speculation on how it really is. Some I did have right and some I did not. What bugs me however is how long it was. It was longer than I remember Rose’s books to be and there was a lot that happened but now after one night, I only really remembers the biggest highlights. Which in my opinion makes this book not as memorable as it should be to receive a four star rating.

Even though this is the book about Daphne and Joseph it was Clay and Steevie who were the most interesting characters. Rose have written a lot of books and I do hope Clay and Steevie got their own. I need to know how that will end.

The plot of the book is quite well done in my opinion. There is some 30 year old secrets, more newer secrets, blackmailing, misunderstandings, kidnappings, hunting and the focus on the strengths of a mother. Never mess with mama bear. I liked it. Some stuff didn’t make sense but regarding how detailed it is, it was quite expected.

FBI agent and public prosecutor race against time to find her kidnapped son. They're both strong, charismatic and competent people with past trauma. I really liked their dynamics and chemistry, and they match up very well. The romance ranks as one of the best ones in the series so far for me.

I liked the established attraction and mutual pining, how they acknowledge their feelings and support each other through their past trauma issues. There's not a lot of push-pull, which I appreciate. And there's definitely a lot of heat and sizzle between them, and I loved how gone he is over her. The suspense is super layered, and there's *a lot* going on, but it's well thought out.

Rather detailed romantic suspense with several main characters that's goes along at quite a good pace. There was one thing that threw me out of the story a couple times. I listened to this book rather than reading it and twice, the narrator changed for about 5 seconds each time. It was like it needed editing & the original narrator wasn't around.

All of the strands were tied up by the end of the book in a rather satisfying conclusion.
