F'ing Ian. That's what you're going to think as you move at a fast pace through this story. Veritas doesn't know what to do about him. LOL.. I can't tell you how many emotions went through me as I listened to this story. Can't wait for the next one, yes, I checked, there is another!

Hmmm... I really enjoyed Veritas and Ian in the first book and did enjoy the second, just not as much. The pacing felt off? Slow? And now I realize it's because there is a THIRD BOOK. WHYYYYYYYYY?

Why can't we just have nice things? A tightly packed story that focuses on defeating the Big Bad that concludes with a pretty finish and the couple living HEA is what I thought I was getting.

But no. We have a 3rd book with a surprise antagonist. I hate feeling like I'm stuck in a loop so I will probably have to put a pin in reading the 3rd until I clear out the pipes from books 1 & 2.

Chaotic and mid.

In contrast to Frost's other heroines, Veritas does not really have a distinct personality, or, at least, very little presence. There is too much going on with her identity (beyond just the dual-nature conundrum) that her character comes off as poorly developed; she's Veritas, she's Ariel, she's a vampire, she's a demigod, she's 4,000 years old, she's a Law Guardian, she's a secret altruist witch. By this point in your life you should at least have more substance beyond just 'titles'. I don't know what it is or if anything I am saying here makes sense, but generally I couldn't relate or empathize. Veritas is powerful but boooring.

The plot is both dull and chaotic. In contrast to the last book, the Dagon arc is no longer compelling. And whatever is going on at the end, abruptly introducing yet more supernatural beings and lore--it's just messy and unnecessary.

Cat's library conversation with Veritas--while one of the most interesting moments in the book--made me so upset because it reminded me how incredible the Night Huntress series is and emphasized how tedious this series is in comparison.

The only thing I found interesting was Veritas coming to terms with her identity.
As typical of Frost's books, everything comes back to trauma. Veritas is forced to confront the long lasting shame and self-fear instilled by a beloved parental figure, and it's an understandably painful experience.

"Fear can make people do terrible things, even to the ones they love," Ian replied in a softer tone. "You know that. You just can't bring yourself to admit it when it comes to Tenoch. Makes you feel disloyal, and that's just the beginning. When you realize it was Tenoch who was wrong and not you, you have to confront the fact that you stuffed half of yourself into a cage merely to appease the fears of a man who should have loved you unconditionally because that is a parent's bloody job."

Getting into the dirty details--because it is that kind of book--the sex scenes in this book seem more consistent with Ian's reputation than in Shades of Wicked. Still kind of tame, but bothered me a lot about the first Night Rebel book given the reputation Frost built up for him over the 14+ books in this universe. A worthy effort. I can kind of buy Ian and Veritas as a couple now.

Most importantly, Silver is still an adorable, precious little angel. I would willingly read an entire chapter just about that floof.

After I finish the series or if I eventually re-read, I might feel differently. At this point, I'm just thankful there's only one Night Rebel book remaining.

Amnesia or memory loss is one of my hated tropes and usually I stop reading a series when an author uses it to reboot a character or add tension to a relationship.

I’m glad I didn’t stop reading this. Frost didn’t let it last forever and didn’t overly use it to reinvigorate things between Ian and Veritas.

Sometimes I feel like I keep reading an author just to recapture the joy of their first book. I feel that way with every book of Thea Harrison’s after Dragon Bound and now with all of Frost’s books after the first Cat and Bones book (okay and the first Leila/Vlad book). Neither author had ever matched those first books for me. Not sure why....

Frost’s books get kind of bogged down in her world building: characters, etc. teleporting everywhere, side quests, added complexity layers to everything. Now the new twist at the end of this book-

Something gleamed in his eyes. An expectant light that belied his trapped circumstances. “We’re not nearly finished with each other, my clever, calculating wife.”

It's official! I am in love with the Night Rebel series! I just can't believe how damn good Ian and Veritas’ story is! And it is really different! Demons, Dark Magic, & Gods! Oh! I just love it! I know it was so very painful waiting for this book after the ending of the last one, but let me tell you, WICKED BITE was worth the wait!

We begin the story where we left off with Ian with vague memories gunning to find Veritas. And let me tell you I absolutely fell head over heels in love with Ian in this book! Veritas took every chance to try and ditch Ian, but he wasn't letting up! They finally come to an understanding and decide to work together to finish what they started with the demon, Dagon! And I enjoyed every minute of their time together!

“To clarify, I might not have known your name, how we came to be together or why you’d left me, but you were not erased. That’s why I was willing to chase you to the point of proving our marriage to a council I despise. It’s also why I’m not going anywhere now. I won’t let a little danger stop me from fighting for what I want.”

And oh, my god! Veritas being in love with Ian and not wanting to push for more from him when it is so damn obvious that he loves her! I mean, I get it, it's Ian we're talking about and we all know Ian! He is deathly allergic to commitment and marriage yet every chance he gets he reminds Veritas of their martial status. And it is hilarious how overprotective Veritas is of Ian! Mencheres is too, but it's so funny! This guy is more than capable of taking care of himself.

We are introduced to some new characters and I am in love! Let's just say I want more of these characters in the next book! And I love whenever the Night Huntress Gang gets together! It just brings a big smile to my face when everyone's together! And oh, my god! That ending! Let's just say that the next book is gonna be so freaking good! I am more than ready to learn about Veritas' family history. And before I forget, fuck the Vampire Council!
