This was a great read. I thought it started off slow, but picked up close to the end. I thought the concept was quite creative. The characters were great. I like the values of family and togetherness.

I thought Cassie was a great character. I am conflicted about Evan still. Ben seems like a great character too. Sammy is one of my favourites. Can't wait to read The Infinite Sea. Overall, an enjoyable read.

genre: sci-fi/dystopian

age recommended: 13+

themes: grief, war, revenge, survival, companionship, trust, hate ,

notes: for older tweens, more mature themes than the hunger games. sex is mentioned a few times. a recommend for anyone who likes invasion sci-fi or for fans of the Ashfall series

opinions: another trilogy in a long list of "it" teen dystopian series. i really liked the bodysnatchers/who can you trust type aspect of but i wasn't really into the whole Evan/Cassie romance (maybe its more exciting if you are a tween/teen) but like Edward/Bella & Catniss/Peat before them, the guy is creepily too obsessed with the girl).

Really liked the interaction btw Nugget and Zombie as well as Cassie and Sammy (Nugget).

I quite enjoyed this book. A lot of it was really predictable - such as the romance, the fact that Evan is actually an alien (seriously, from the summary alone, I kinda figured). Some of it was less so. Won't give spoilers. Mind = BLOWN. I was kinda catching on the more I read, but I didn't really believe it until it was confirmed, then I was all OH MY GOD, IT'S THE 5TH WAVE AAAHHH

There's a sense of desperation prominent throughout the book as Cassie struggles to get back to her younger brother. She's completely alone (both her parents have died in previous waves), at least until she meets Evan, whom she doesn't trust, then she does, then she doesn't. And it kinda just goes like that, because he keeps being sketchy, and she keeps catching him being sketchy, but he's HOT and manly and gentle, so that makes it easier to trust him. I mean, it's sort of realistic in that most people are looks-biased, but it was the only part of the book I really couldn't stand. Seems like all the sketchy stuff really outweighed his hotness IMO.

i enjoyed most of this book, the only thing that threw me off was the relationship between Cassie & Evan. and then there’s the constant repetition of words in the same sentence. but overall, i liked it, and i’m glad i started the series. i’ve heard that a lot of people don’t like the movie, but maybe i’ll watch it someday and figure out whether i like it or not.

To be completely honest, this genre of book isn’t my cup of tea. So my review is probably biased because of that. And with every chapter things got more and more hopeless and depressing, so it got harder to stick with. There is lots of trauma, death, action, and some really soft romance. A “good” ending seemed impossible, so why keep reading? Well, I still think the characters were well written and the storyline compelling enough to know “so then what happens??” The young girl narrator was the narration I enjoyed most out of the several narration perspectives in the book. I was hooked in the last couple hours of the audiobook. I spent so much of the audiobook saying I wouldn’t continue with the series, but after reading the end, I’m really tempted to get the next in the series.
