Le bajo medio punto porque el final no me convence en absoluto. Aún así es entretenido y de fácil lectura, aunque me esperaba algo más de investigación policial.

Eh. There were things I liked about it and things I didnt. Its a decent story. The love story is lame. The mystery decently surprising. I like it when you have a chance at guessing the ending. I dont think you did in this one. But I did read the end after a few chapters. But its a big plus to me that it did not contain profanity or gruesome images.

It felt like a book on Victorian social etiquette more than a murder mystery, with the social norms really shoved down your throat. A bit bizarre to have almost all the scenes take place in the drawing room -- it felt so removed from the actual story of the hangman, but perhaps that's the idea? Women only as involved as convention would allow.
Maybe it's more accurate about what involvement a woman was like to have than Veronica Speedwell or Charlotte Holmes. But it didn't do it for me.

It was okay. Nice to follow the various characters' plotlines. But I knew the murderer from Chapter 2, and there were no actual clues in the book. We just follow the story along until the very end, when our heroine meets the murderer and is put in danger, thus the case is solved. Meh.

Also, the book was rather dark. I will continue as there is nothing better available at the moment, but not too excited about this series.

I enjoyed this quite a bit but was pretty horrified to find I unknowingly started a series with 20+ books to it. Not what I need! Charlotte was a really interesting female lead for this time period and I enjoyed her growth over the course of the book. Her struggle between what society expects of her and who she wants to be is very apparent and well developed. I considered three or four different suspects at different times through the book but really wasn't sure of the guilty party until quite close to the end. Although I definitely didn't suspect those motives! I'd be tempted to read another but I'm not sure I want to get more involved with so many books in the series.

There was a lot I liked about this book and it definitely felt like a solid start to a series. I enjoyed Charlotte's character and the explorations of the dynamics within her family and community and of her developing relationship with Pitt. There's a lot of great commentary around familial and societal expectations and women's places within these, and I found the writing style compelling and easy to get on with too.

My main issue was that, while I found the main mystery strand of the book to be really solid overall, I felt that the ending was far too rushed and that we really missed out on some potentially great exploration of the themes involved. I will also say that my feelings about the ending are definitely wrapped up in what we now know about the author...

I already own the next couple of books in the series, so I'll definitely read those and I'm looking forward to continuing to get to know Charlotte and to hopefully getting immersed in some interesting mysteries with more developed conclusions. Beyond that, I'll see how committed I feel to venturing further!

So this was the first book I have read after hearing Anne Perry speak on her writing process, and a lot of how she frames the story makes more sense to me now. Unfortunately I can say with confidence that it's not necessarily my preference. Both books I've read by her have ended so abruptly, without any sort of explanation of how it got to that point. I guess she just leaves it up to imagination, but for such a long winded mystery you think the author would take the time to explain it. Granted, I've read only the first books in each of Anne Perry's famous series, so maybe it develops over the course of the books (I find a lot of writers, particularly mystery writers, take some time to find their groove), but for now I'll hold off on discovering that myself.
