Great book. Starts off slowly (first 30 pages or so), but quickly becomes much more interesting. It's a psychological thriller about murder. Reminded me of how interesting classics can be and how good of a writer Zola was. The language is a little more cumbersome than modern language at times, but generally it is a pretty easy read.

So... this was good. Really, really weird and pulpy, mixed with in with some good old Zola "science-dictates-that-you-must-be-miserable" theory.

It's difficult to discuss the book without spoilers, but suffice to say that there are, what, twenty characters, and let's say about 18 of them die, almost die, plot murder, attempt murder, or successfully pull off a murder. Seriously, these people all need help. Especially Séverine. Someone help her.

Would I recommend reading this? It's an interesting precursor to the noir detective story, although there isn't much of a mystery. It's also pretty good at developing characters (*cough*Séverine*cough*) while also portraying how others characters see them.

I do recommend this, but it comes with trigger warnings. This is Zola, after all, what were you expecting.

!!!!!

Ouf... Un roman très dur, encore, qui ne donne pas une image très glorieuse de la nature humaine. Mais c'est Zola...

this isn't a whodunnit it's more of a whohasntdunnit

The perfect book for those who find watching grass grow just too unbearably exciting. A promising premise for a story drowned in inane detailing, incessant repetition, idle chitter-chatter, and gossipy dialogue. The insight into the workings of the French railways in the 19th century may conceivably of some interest to certain readers.
