The Last Coyote would have been an excellent finale for Harry Bosch had the author so chosen. Harry gets to think about this life as a cop and his motivations while also, solving his mother's 30-year old murder. In a way, I am disappointed that Michael Connelly did not choose to end the series here since Harry discovers all of the above but in another way, I am happy that the series does not end. Because who does not want more Bosch?

The plot itself consists of two main threads - the afore mentioned soul searching that happens due to a forced stress leave and the search for a resolution to his mother's murder. The soul searching is the primary thread in the initial portions of the book and slowly, the murder takes precedence until the final pages of the book where Harry is forced to look at himself and make some hard decisions.

As a mystery, I was not hooked on to it, unlike the previous books. Except for the conclusion to the mystery which came out of nowhere and redeemed the story. But, yeah, the plot drags in places and I had to take a number of breaks to finish the book.

When I compare this plot to the one of the threads in Seasons 1 & 2 of Bosch, I think the overall pacing was much better there than in The Last Coyote. Oh and one more thing, the coyote makes an appearance only a couple of times.

A very powerful book. Delves deeply into the history of the main character and it brings out lots of different emotions in him. There are some guilt feelings about his mom's death and the deaths of some others he feels he may have caused inadvertently. The past and the present become entangled as he decides to figure out who killed his mom. Some of the suspects end up dead and even though they did not do the actual killing they were not without criminal guilt.
Was surprised to see who was the actual killer and a little saddened by it also, did not suspect that person at all.

Harry Bosch solves the murder of his mother - very noir feel to this novel. I enjoyed it. Bosch is one of my favorite characters - flawed but noble.

Harry Bosch has always wondered about his mother's murder. It is one of the things that drives him. In The Last Coyote, Harry will find out the true story, no matter the cost. While he is on paid stress leave, he begins to investigate what happened 35 years ago. He quickly learns that there's a lot more to the case. Harry also quickly discovers that there are a lot of powerful people involved. But in typical Bosch fashion, he pushes for answers and justice.

This is a story that not only helps the fans to get a better handle on Bosch the individual. The Bosch series is wonderful and this story only increases the richness of the main character. Highly recommended to all mystery/thriller fans.

It's not like Connelly's writing is stellar or literary or anything, but the reader can tell he's an expert on all those little details that move a story along. I appreciate it.

I've got to stop reading these books. I've read four in the last week and I can't stop. They're addictive. I can hardly stop enough to eat two meals a day.

This one has Harry on forced leave after a run-in with his Lieutenant. So he decides to use the time to investigate the murder of his mother thirty-five years previously. As usual, there are lots of twists in the plot and some interesting secondary characters.
