A little bit too long which makes some part of it boring. Quite an interesting plotline though. The element of horror is on point

I first read this years ago, when it first came out. So I had the gist of the plot already in mind before I started my second reading. There is magic in this book. It really came alive for me and almost felt like the first time all over again. It is a bit of an intimidating size, but no words are wasted. Everything links together beautifully and move the story forwards. Fantastic storytelling from a master of his craft. (Although I do find with Stephen King books they are either totally amazing or utter nonsense.) Some of the most gorgeous characters every created are caught up in this story. I LOVE Duddits, Jonesy, Henry, Beaver and Pete. Their friendship and adventures are awesome. But Duddits is my favourite! Who couldn't use a bit of his magic in their lives?
Was this book written by a 14-year-old? It has ass aliens and 600 pages of dudes farting in the woods. I'm ashamed to admit I enjoyed it immensely. It even gave me nightmares, which is a good thing with a horror book. This is a fairly standard alien invasion story. There are alien pregnancies, secretive military guys, lots of guts and guns. There's a magic man with Down syndrome because apparently the Magic Negro who usually saves the day in King novels is on vacation or something. I'm not sure what to say about this book. Is it a work of literary genius? No. But, it's brilliant in the way that cheesy horror movies are brilliant. They help you escape from life and make you smile and cringe and wonder how people come up with this disgusting stuff. It's just fun. If you enjoyed The Stand, IT, or The Tommyknockers, you'll like this novel. It has similar themes to King's other famous books.
Yes it did take almost a year to read this. I kept getting distracted by other books and honestly, stuck in the middle of this one. I didn't enjoy it as much as his others. That ending.....was pretty damn good. The plot did start picking up around page 600. By then I was seeing litle patterns, those little hints that Stephen King does so well. They all started coming together and the book was then much mofre enjoyable to read. Would I read it again? Maybe not. Probably look to The Shining or Mr Mercedes series as rereads instead.
When I picked this up, my first thought was that it may take me a while, it’s quite a big book! But once I got started it seemed to whizz by. I have to confess there was one point, that I had to put the book down as I had a feeling something was going to happen, and I’m so glad I did before I turned the light out, as it got quite freaky when I picked it up the following day.
Yes parts of the plot are quite ridiculous and if you are offended by farting, then it’s probably not the book for you (it gets mentioned a lot!). But the fact that five friends that have maybe lost touch as their lives changed, still have such a strong bond. I was a bit sad we didn’t see more of Beaver, he seemed like my kind of character, but the star for me was definitely Duddits. It’s maybe showing it’s age a bit too, some of the language isn’t really acceptable now but I still found this an entertaining read.
