This was so good, I can’t believe I let it sit on my TBR for so long. Yes, it did drag sometimes but David Mogo is quite the character and so is his dystopian Lagos and the entire cast of characters. I loved that the book has an authentic representation of the Yoruba and Urhobo Pantheon and is unapologetically Nigerian with its storytelling.
Narration that “talks” to the reader irritates me, character that’s trying very hard to be cool irritates me, I don’t even like urban fantasy lol
fast-paced
I didn’t like this book quite as much as the other work by Okungbowa that I’ve read, Lost Ark Dreaming. I liked a lot of the themes presented—the search for home, the idea that you’re the villain in your own villain’s story, the fear that you destroy everything and everyone you touch—but didn’t feel as though they were fleshed out as much as I’d like. The final resolution also fell kind of flat to me.
I thought the conflicts between characters who were on the same side was really good! I like when protagonists squabble with each other lmao. It often makes for more interesting reading. Some of the worldbuilding was also fun, like the recipe for the potion that makes weapons more potent against gods.

david mogo, godhunter is such an entertaining read. from the characters to relationship dynamics to the lore and mythology, this book kept me hooked and interested.
i found it initially confusing when it seemed like the book was nearing an end after apparently facing the big bad, then realized this was a story told in three specific parts/sections, and reoriented myself. the format of the plot was very fun and kept the pace up, so that it didn’t feel like i was dragging as i read. i especially found myself consuming this book as more of the lore and information regarding the gods started coming into play, which i think was my favorite part of this book.
david mogo, godhunter tells a wonderful, invigorating tale of a demigod working as a godhunter in lagos, nigeria after the gods fall to the earth. this book weaves a complex, heartfelt story of finding your family, accepting yourself, and doing what it takes to not only embrace who you are but defend the ones you love. i also really enjoyed the surprise queer relationship!!

If you were looking for a sign to read this book this is it!!!
This book had me squealing like an excited teenager. I don’t normally enjoy fantasy but I could picture Lagos in that light.
Oh my goodness.

I do not have any lived experience of Lagos. However, I appreciated the world building that allowed me as a reader to visualize the setting. I enjoyed the tale. the main character has some flaws and growing to do, which should be expected in a good fantasy. I'm looking forward to reading more.
