I was a huge fan of mystery novels back in middle school, and devoured many of The Cat Who... series, probably because I was initially attracted to their brightly coloured covers (I remember some of these looking practically neon). Reading one of these books years later, I can understand why I was so into them. They're quite easy to read, for one thing, and the cats are somewhat cute, even if I'm not an animal person at all. The plot of this one was fairly basic. In fact, there almost seemed to be not enough material in this one for a full novel that many little tidbits and anecdotes about Pickax's various inhabitants were included, a lot of which was just unnecessary background information about the main character and his relationship to the town and its people. Not a bad read, but I certainly won't be picking up any of these books again.

Fun little cozy mysteries to decompress to. I listened to this as an audiobook because it’s one series I enjoy much more that way.

Not one of my favorites of this author. But it was much better than the first in the series. I'm a little biased toward the "Cat Who Said Cheese" so far (regarding these books).

There is a point in which cozy just becomes boring. This book is proof.

Knew from the beginning that Carter Lee was not to be trusted. A good, easy listening tale.

Wow, Polly really deserves a better boyfriend than this “I know better than you” disdainful jerk. Qwill seems nice enough to everyone else in his life, but he really does not treat Polly well or respect her the way he should

Smarmy characters invade Pickaxe and Qwill's moustache sends signals along with Koko developing a penchant for Melville. Qwill also finally makes an appearance in his Mackintosh tartan!

This book is certainly a product of its time and setting (a small town), and so you have to be able to forgive it things like weird gender roles, much commenting on people's weight and women's clothing, exotifying non-white food, etc. But if you can manage that, the story is well written and draws you in. The ending is very ridiculous, but in a fun, Sherlock- Holmes-reveal type of way, and I enjoyed it. So overall, three stars for being fun while not fully recommendable.
