The first half of the book was better than the latter. I think there were too many threads to satisfactorily weave them all together at the end. Great sense of atmosphere in the time and location though.
My two best friends and I decided to read this book together, in a sort of book club, except that our book club would meet through the powers of the Internet as we all live in different parts of the same country. I was a little hesitant at first (but don't tell them that (hi, Karin and Leci)); I don't like assigned reading. But this wasn't exactly assigned reading as it was sitting on my bookshelf and I had planned to read it eventually.
Anyway.
Here are some things I thought throughout this book that turned out to be totally not true (most of this comes from the very first chapter) (also, spoilers-ish): The funeral at the beginning was for the miniaturist. The young woman and servant were the miniaturist's wife and the miniaturist's servant. The person whose perspective we were reading the first chapter from was Nella and she was having an affair with the miniaturist. Johannes wasn't interested in sleeping with Nella because he was sleeping with Marin. Jack was the miniaturist. Jack and Nella were going to have an affair. Marin was a huge, raging bitch.
Turns out Marin was kind of bitchy but she was also pretty justified in her feelings toward the world.
So ... I liked this story but I did not like ANY of the characters, which makes it extremely difficult to like a book. I wish we'd learned more about the characters other than Nella, especially Johannes and the miniaturist. It was tiresome to read from Nella's whiney perspective. I don't care how many times she tried to convince everyone that she was not a child; she did not convince me.
The thing I liked best was going back and reading the first chapter after I'd finished the book. It was somewhat enlightening and definitely interesting to think of what I'd assumed and learn how very wrong I was. Just as the miniaturist gave hints to Nella about her life throughout the book, the miniaturist gave me hints about the book right there in the very first chapter.

Se creo una expectativa en la reseña que nunca la encontré en el libro.
Creo que se intentó abordar temas que en la época en que está narrado daban de que hablar, pero a mi realmente no me sorprendieron..
El tema es esa maldita reseña..
