3.5

Yine de 17. yüzyıl Amsterdam’i okumak keyifliydi.

Difficult one, this. I saw the BBC adaptation last year, which I really enjoyed. So when the book appeared on the Book Swap shelf at work, I thought I'd give it a go. The BBC remain faithful to the story, and knowing what will happen does spoil the air of tension and mystery in the book. That said, the writing is beautiful, and the insight into life in 19th century Amsterdam is fascinating. Unlike other reviewers I thought the characters were believable and complex, although this could be down to feeling I already 'know' them from TV.

This is a beautifully crafted novel that swept me off my feet. Set in 17th century Amsterdam, the story follows young Nella Oortman as she navigates the complexities of her new marriage and becomes entranced by a mysterious miniaturist whose creations seem to predict the future.

What really sets this book apart is Burton's enchanting writing style. Her vivid descriptions bring the historical setting to life, immersing you in a world filled with intrigue and secrets. The pace is just right, keeping you engaged while gradually unraveling the mystery at the heart of the story.

The characters are wonderfully fleshed out, especially Nella, who evolves from a naive girl into a strong, independent woman. The novel tackles themes of power, freedom, and identity with a subtle touch, making it thought-provoking without ever feeling preachy.

I found myself completely absorbed in the narrative, eager to see how the intricate plot would unfold. While some questions lingered even after the last page, the ambiguity only added to the novel's allure for me.

Overall, this is a captivating and elegantly written tale that I highly recommend to anyone looking for a historical fiction with a touch of mystery and the supernatural.

I am so confused. I loved the writing style and the development and growth of Nella’s character and at some point the book became a page turner to me. But some plot twists were too predictable and then it went so dark I’m still recovering.

Could have done without the elements around the minitiarist.  Pressure of period Protestant Amsterdam life well painted

I gave this book three stars, but I feel that’s misleading. The book itself was a great read. A could not put it down thought about it frequently plot. The only problem I had with the book was that I did not like a single character in this book. Not one single character endeared themselves to me, and I could have done without every person. The dogs and birds has more personality than these people. I’ve not read a book in all my life like this. Great plot, terrible characters. A five star plot with one star characters...
