There's a difference between really loving someone and loving the idea of her.

Gone Girl is one of my favorite movies of all time, but I think this is the first time I've ever read an adult thriller. I definitely want to read more after finishing this, especially Gillian Flynn's debut, Sharp Objects (I watched the HBO miniseries over the summer and loved it). This book is insane from start to finish, and it's so well-written. I thought maybe I wouldn't enjoy it as much because I already knew the story, having watched the movie first, but that didn't change anything, I still loved it.

In the movie, I liked Amy a lot more, but I think towards the end of the book, I was sympathetic towards Nick, which I never would've expected lol. I saw people saying they didn't enjoy the book because they found the characters unlikable, but I kind of feel like that was the point. Anyways, I honestly couldn't find any flaws with this book, and I had such a good time reading it, so obviously I have to give it 5 stars.

I'm not sure what to write about this book yet and I think I need to decide later on the number of stars. This book wasd extremely interesting and I wanted to strangle the characters throughout the story. The lead characters are completely flawed and you love them and hate them at the same time.

5-15-13:
Ok, I trulydid love this book. There was a lot in this bookwhere you related to both characters on a fundamental level. While we may not have liked one person in the book, we understood that person (as screwed up as they are). I think I was hoping for a happier ending and didn't get it, but that doesn't take away from the book's fantastic status in my opinion.

I'm trying to word this carefully because I don't want to have spoilers in my review of this book because there were portions of this book that surprised the crap out of me in a good way. I would honestly love to see a sequel for this book and will be looking at other books that this author wrote because it was so well written and fun. I hope everyone else enjoys this as much as I have.

This was truly a page turner and an excellent mystery. Once I was about 20 pages in, I knew I wouldn’t be able to put it down. It’s just a fascinating book about characters who feel so much like they could exist and yet at the same time feel so far removed from reality. The prose also just hooked me.
I loved, absolutely loved how Nick and Amy’s thoughts mirror each other even as they hate each other and are convinced they’re each in the right. How in some perverse way they’re perfect for each other. The thing is, in a vacuum, Amy isn’t wrong about some of the things she says. Men do build up an idea of a “cool woman” in their heads. Her parents were fucked up for writing books about what they wanted their daughter to be. At the same time she’s so naive and thinks she’s a brilliant planner when she foiled her own plans by not knowing how to live in the real world. So in some ways Nick is right too, that she was a spoiled rich girl. It’s just so good because of the characters, how you can agree with them for a second before thinking wait, she’s actually crazy, he’s actually horrible. I loved it.
