There is a special place in my heart for illustrated books. They were the first ones I read as a child and I've only appreciated them more as I get older. I also have a fondness for novellas and short stories, because they are great insights into characters and a world created with the love of an author.

NIGHT OF CAKE AND PUPPETS is one of my favourites. It tells the story of how Mik and Zuzana met, and it is the most heart-warming, sweet little adventure I've ever read. There is no threat or danger or anything that pushes the boundaries of the larger story. It's just two young people finally working up the courage to go on their first date. I adored it.

The illustrations are gorgeous, and it's clear that Laini and Jim had a great time working on this story. It's whimsical, funny, and imaginative. It made me smile nearly the whole way through.

Definitely a recommendation for fans of the DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE trilogy, and anyone who likes meet-cutes, romance, and humour.

Such an unexpected treat. Witty and so perfectly captures the magic of first love.

This was basically a straight-up romance, with no real surprises since we know from reading [b:Days of Blood & Starlight|12812550|Days of Blood & Starlight (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #2)|Laini Taylor|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1337964452s/12812550.jpg|17961723] that Zuzana and Mik end up together. It is super cute to see how they get there though. I love the fact that it is Zuzana who makes the first move, that she didn't wait around for the guy to initiate as per the conventional gender roles, and what an elaborate and romantic first move it was! Normally, I feel that these kinds of grand gestures are way over the top but this time I was totally charmed.

I loved this so so so very much. It will make you grin like crazy, and how appropriate that Cake is in the title, because that's what this short little story is: delicious, frosting-thick cake that you want to gobble down in instant and yet savor every bite.

The only bad thing is that it reminded me of how much I love Laini Taylor's prose and now I am just DYING to read the last book in this series. I suppose I'll have to settle with re-reading the first two, at least until April.

Cute, maar wel zo cheesy dat je er een grote kaasfondue mee kan houden.
