THIS BOOK TOTALLY STOLE MY HEART.
When I heard about Uncle Rick's new imprint, I was so happy I wanted to hunt him down to hug him for his brilliance. I grew up with mythology and when I started reading Uncle Rick's books, I fell more in love with mythology. Now, here's an imprint which aims to showcase mythology from different countries and cultures and I just wanted to read Aru Shah (the first book in the imprint) so bad. I'm familiar with Indian myth but it's just so vast that the myths are blurry in my brain. The thing about books based on mythology is you can have fun while reading and you can also learn. Trust me, once you're done with this book you will love Indian mythology and you won't get enough of Aru Shah's adventures.
To fit in, Aru Shah favored lies instead of the truth and pretended to have a life very different from her own. Her life changed when she decided to light up the mysterious lamp from their museum just to show-off to her three classmates. Lighting the lamp was definitely a mistake because Aru accidentally unleashed the Sleeper—a demon who can bring about the end of Time itself. Now it is up to Aru and her Pandava sibling so save the world. This can be a very difficult feat because she never knew she was a reincarnation of a demigod destined to fight demons and end Armageddon. Will Aru Shah be able to fight the Sleeper and learn the truth about herself?
So yeah. I definitely loved Aru, Mini and Boo! They are such adorable and funny creatures and I liked them immediately. Chokshi established Indian myth in a very funny and entertaining way reminiscent of Rick Riordan's witty humor. I am especially happy of the fact that Mini is half Filipino. I have read hundreds of books but I haven't come across a character with Filipino blood. It's amazing how much Chokshi knows about Filipino culture too and my Filipino blood hummed every time I read something about the Philippines. Because Mini has Filipino blood, I immediately felt a bond with her. Of course, Aru is very lovable too. She is a girl with a very creative mind and without her cunning ideas, they might have not survived. I LOVE SMART AND WITTY CHARACTERS. It's refreshing to understand that wit is just as important as fighting prowess (proud daughter of Athena here!). And then there's Boo. OH I LOVE BOO. Despite his dark past, he has a heart of a marshmallow and cares so much for the girls. I love it everytime he poops on demons to distract them. BOO IS MY NEW SPIRIT ANIMAL.
Aru Shah and the End of Time is a gripping tale based from Indian Mythology. It is the type of book that will never let you go once you've read the opening line. You will surely learn a lot of things and will laugh like crazy because of the witty dialogues. This is definitely one of my most favorite reads of the year (so far). I CAN'T WAIT FOR BOOK TWO ASDFKGLDHSJ.
I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE OTHER BOOKS FROM RICK RIORDAN PRESENTS TOO. My nerdy brain craves mythology so much it needs to be fed frequently. Thank you Uncle Rick for finding ways to feed my brain. It's wonderful to meet new tales of godly dysfunctional families, treachery, adorable demigods, annoying demons, and more. MYTHOLOGY ROCKS.

reread and loved it for the second time!!!
this book reminded me why i love MG so much—the characters, the humor, the chapter titles. Roshani Chokshi is already brilliant when writing YA and i just love her more now after reading aru shah for the second time. i found myself laughing a lot of times while reading this. aru's voice is so distinct and i loved being inside her head. the hindu mythology-inspired world never fails to amaze me because i always love to learn new things about myths. I ALSO LOVE MINI SO MUCH. the first time i read this book, i almost cried because i hardly see any Filipino character in a book. mini is indian and filipino. reading references about my own culture meant so much to me. i love her friendship with aru as well. the development of their friendship was done at a perfect pace. in fact, the pacing of this whole book is perfect.
i literally don't have anything negative to say about this. im so excited to read more about aru and the other pandavas!

Eh, it was all right. I mean, it was pretty clear what I was in for when there’s Rick Riordan’s name slapped on the cover. It’s Percy Jackson with Hindu mythology. Though I didn’t feel like I learned much about Hindu mythology reading the story. Not until I made it to the glossary, anyway.
Functionally, Aru Shah is just a girl version of Percy Jackson (I would say she’s “Percy Jackson with boobs,” but she’s only, what, 11 or 12?) Mini had more personality by comparison (wet blanket that she was). Boo (the god in a pigeon’s body) was pretty funny, but he got birdnapped partway through the story, so he wasn’t there to bring some life to this painfully derivative story.
And - ugh - Aru’s big “F-you” line to the villain at the end? She’s not a hero, she’s a *heroine.* Oooh, yeah, you really told him off. The Sleeper’s totally shaking in his shoes now. Girl power, or something.
What is she, a Spice Girl? Give me a freaking break.

This was cute. And more importantly, it's the first of the publishing imprint where people apply the rough tropes of Rick Riordan's books (the children of the gods in the modern world) to their religious myth structures. I learned a lot I didn't know about Hindu myth and the Pandava brothers, and look forward to more.
Is it great art? No, but it's cute and engaging and has some nice YA moral questions. There are pop culture references that will stale in a few years, but that's not a huge issue.

Turns out, I am not the right audience for this book even though I should be. I love fantasy adventures and quests. I love young heroines. I love mythology. So on paper, I should have loved this book. But I didn't. The execution was too convoluted. The character work was okay. I didn't find the book particularly funny but I got it - the humor is for kids. There are lots of similarities to the Percy Jackson books. And that also explains why I didn't like this book cuz I also didn't like the The Lightning Thief and never carried on with that series. For the story it had to tell, this book was way too long.
Great story! I learned some cool stuff about the Pandava's and just really enjoyed the story.
I could never really get into the Percy Jackson books so I was a little worried about this one. It's a different kind of story and reminded me a lot of Harry Potter. Must read for all fantasy fans!

I loved learnt by the Indian mythology and Are is a very relatable character. Young adults would definitely enjoy not. But it was a little choppy to read.

She lights the lamp to prove to them that she wasn't lying and frees an ancient demon. Aru Shah must find the reincarnations of the five Pandava brothers to stop the demon she released. The adventure that follows is magical and heartwarming.
