It was great to read the original story and it is well told once you get passed how much of a product of its time it was.
Loved it. Although the ending was a big "WTF" moment. Quite a bit of the story is different from the Disney-version. Definitely felt like an Edgar Rice Burroughs book. Always something happening, keeps the pages turning.
Tarzan of the Apes-3⭐️-I knew this book wasn’t going to be the cutesy Disney classic I grew up with but I am a little shocked as to how bloody and raw it was, and how drastically the storyline veered between the 2 mediums. Prof. Porter wasn’t there to study apes, and he and Jane were Americans! Tarzan was also related to Clayton, who wasn’t so much of a villain in the books. Also it’s unclear as of now if Tarzan and Jane end up together which will ruin me if they don’t. Despite the differences I did enjoy the book in its own way- however it must be said that this book was written in the early 1900’s so racial biased is prevalent.
Oh man. This is what I get for picking up a book published the same year as the sinking of the flippin' Titanic. The RACISM. I just can't. Instead of someone being called a Mary Sue they should be called a Tarzan because MY GOD, this bitch. He just instantly knows everything and is good at it despite not being raised by humans. Making rope at tying it into knots and using it to lasso? Come on. Instant boner when he sees a human female for the first time. Jane Porter was the only redeeming quality of this book besides it delivering nice prose every now and then. I can't believe there are TWENTY-FUCKING-FOUR books of this.
ERB is one of my favorite authors. This book was no exception to my regard. It was a great story, with unpredictable plot elements I found encouraging and enjoyable. Well written and fast-paced.
The characters and storyline were developed in good manner. I would recommend this book.

adventurous
mysterious
tense
medium-paced
I had bought the second book at a used book store, but I'll be donating after having finished book one...
It wasn't necessarily bad, but I think the character in the cultural zeitgeist has outgrown the original story. You probably know all you want to know about Tarzan without reading this and spoiling your mental image. Overly long, pretty racist, way too many mentions of sinew, and a depressing ending took away from the overall enjoyment.

Tarzan is a man's man. That is what I like best about this book. He was both cunning and strong, smarter and stronger than most men out of a necessity to survive. He was a man who realized his full potential out there in the wild.
The Crash Test Dummies belittle Tarzan in their song about Superman, saying he isn't a real gent, but he proves that he can function well in society. In fact, Superman is all fake, but Tarzan is the type of man that maybe we could be given the right circumstances. The book was much better than I expected, but I don't plan on reading any sequels. This type of book could get old really quickly and I don't want to ruin my regard for this story.

I think I had too high hopes while reading this one. As in the story would have been at a more similar level to the Junglebook(s) which I just ended up loving and which I thought was better than the adaptations.
I would say this is better than the original Sleepy Hollow, which I felt was a huge let down compared to all the adaptations to the point were it just felt somewhat silly to me! This is alright, but again I think the various adaptations of Tarzan are better than the original story. The writing/speed is fine but there are just things the adaptations did better. Like when it comes to his gorilla family, how he learned a language and so on. It makes no sense to me how you can read/understand a language when you have never been exposed to it by someone/something. A linguistic may be allowed to school me on this, because I really can't see how you can learn and grasp something as complex as a language without exposure from a relevant source. Especially when we're talking about an infant and not young kid having had some sort of limited exposure early on.
The understanding of the animals makes so much more sense than he's capable of reading and writing and understanding what's what.
If I'll give some of the other stories in the series a shot in the future I have no idea.
That said I'm glad I read the original story regardless.
