Good if you need something light and quick. I think Sophy is a bit of a Mary Sue, but I guess that's how romance novels go. You just accept these things going in, like cousins marrying cousins. And ignore the racist depiction of the money lender.

But do you need fluff to hide away from the mess of your life? This book has stood the test of time.

The Grand Sophy is definitely one of the most enjoyable romance novels that I've ever read!

The Rivenhall family needs an intervention. Charles is the oldest son, and after shouldering his father's debt, he takes charge of the family finances. His intentions are good, but his effort distances him from his family. His choice of a dull, tiresome bride adds further tension to the atmosphere of the house.

Enter Sophy. She's smart, strong, and unconventional. She immediately sees that the family is not as it should be, and finds a way to work everything out to her liking.

It was a great delight to get to know her along the way.

This was great. Minus half a star for the plot stretching a beat too long and the stereotypically Jewish evil moneylender. Otherwise the vivacious and bold but caring heroine is easy to root for, the cousins are prime for shaking up, and the turn of the century take on regency romance is much more action packed and humorous than much of the writing of the period. Would make a fantastic BBC period drama.

This was lovely. Witty, light-hearted, and hilarious. One star off for some anti-Semitic descriptions of a moneylender (even if she was trying to be "true to the time", it should have been something a character said, not a narrated character description) and the fact that as an individual, Sophy shows so little vulnerability as to seem almost inhuman. I'm not sure she was ever depicted as having a real moment of self-doubt or sadness throughout the entire book. Despite this, she never actually managed to be irritating. Quite the opposite: Sophy is one of the most charming Heyer heroines I've read.

I normally enjoy Heyer for her humor and active, interesting heroines and this was no exception BUT. Ooff. Real Shylock situation with that evil money lender. He had and I quote a ‘Semitic’ nose?? Classics often slap you in the face with some kind of racism so I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised but honestly I was! It’s difficult for me to rate the book because the rest of it had a lot of merit as far as its treatment of women was concerned.
