I would give this more than 5 stars if I could. Best book I’ve read in YEARS. Funny, clever, and heartwarming. I loved every minute of this book.
What a fun, delightful story! THE MOSTLY TRUE STORY OF TANNER AND LOUISE was the feel-good book I didn’t know I needed! The book was both heartwarming and endearing and I adored the main characters, Tanner and Louise!
Twenty-one year old Tanner Quimby is down on her luck. Not only did she lose her soccer scholarship at Northwestern because of an unfortunate leg injury, she needs to find a job and a place to live.
Octogenarian Louise Wilt, a recent widow, is fiercely independent and young at heart. She loves her crossword puzzles, daily vodka happy hours, and most of all, her independence. But after a recent hip injury / fall, her daughter insists that she hire a caretaker slash driver.
When Tanner discovers a job opening to be Louise’s live-in caretaker, she jumps at the chance. At first both women are content at ignoring each other, but soon Tanner starts noticing things that seem amiss. Like the garden shed that’s locked up like Ft. Knox and how Louise looks uncannily like a suspect for the largest jewelry heist in American history as shown on the local news! Things get even weirder when Louise announces one morning that they need to leave town ASAP!
That moment leads to the greatest adventure of both their lives. This unlikely duo form a strong bond and I loved the dynamic between the two. On the surface, Tanner and Louise could not be more different, but they’re actually more similar than they think. Their witty banter was my favorite! Their convos were downright hilarious and I loved Louise’s little pearls of wisdom.
The plot was entertaining and really clever! I especially loved hearing Louise’s backstory and the little twists at the end were super fun! 4.5⭐️
Thank you so much, @berkleypub, for the gifted book, and @prhaudio for the complementary audiobook! THE MOSTLY TRUE STORY OF TANNER AND LOUISE comes out on March 28!

I love it! It is my favorite book by Colleen Oakley. The characters are amazing!
A different book than I usually read, this story brought out more quirky adventure in me than I thought possible. Predictable some parts and others not so much I found this book to be a pleasant read.

Book club, friendship adventure fun.
I really loved this one! The timeline is all over the place - telling you just what you need to know when you need to know it. Louise (aka Mrs. Wilt) is a delight - a spunky older woman trying to make amends. Tanner (a 20 year old college student) moves in with her to help out after Louise comes home from hip surgery. Then one night they leave in a jaguar to get George in California.
Nothing is as it seems - Louise seems to know what's up, but she shares just enough information, never too much. I love how she mentored Tanner - really saw her when no one else in her life could.
Over the course of a road trip across the country, they learn more about each other - and themselves. It's a truly delightful read!!

My mother absolutely adored Colleen Oakley's "The Invisible Husband of Frick Island", so when this book showed up at our local bookstore, I knew I had to give it a try.
"The Mostly True Story of Tanner and Louise" was so much fun to read from start to finish. Tanner and Louise couldn't want to be living together less if they tried. (I don't know about that actually... Louise is a pretty stubborn woman when she sets her mind to something.) Even though they don't understand each other or their habits and routines when they first meet, that all changes when they have to go on the run from the law.
Even when I thought I knew where this book was headed, I truly had no idea even down to the final few pages. You never truly know anyone and until you try to put yourself in their shoes, you won't understand why they make the choices they make. But once you finally let go of what you think you know, you might enjoy the journey a little bit more and you might have more similarities than you could imagine.
