Wow - fantastic. I was riveted to the end. Lots to talk about with the 11yo (who also read it).
Set in middle America, 1943, Annabelle’s life is changed by the arrival of Betty Glengarry, who immediately sets about bullying her.
A chain of events are set into motion, involving injury to Annabelle’s friends, family and even animals, and when Betty goes missing, the blame is pinned firmly in Toby, the town’s outsider, a man ravaged by the memories of war.
What follows is a coming-of-age tale in which Annabelle has to choose when to lie for good, when to keep secrets and learns who to trust. It is language-rich and I particularly loved Annabelle’s family - her parents are firmly on Annabelle’s side, and Aunt Lily gets what she deserves.
A must-read.

I'm still undecided about this book. Parts of it felt very contrived-especially the ending, and I don't think the kid appeal is very high-so it would be hard for me to recommend. I did like the setting, the 'history' of Wolf Hollow, and Annabelle's relationship with her family.
Summary: Twelve-year-old Annabelle must learn to stand up for what's right in the face of a manipulative and violent new bully who targets people Annabelle cares about, including a homeless World War I veteran.

Annabelle lives quietly with her family in rural Pennsylvania. But that quiet is shattered when Betty moves in with her grandparents. Betty is your typical mean girl of today even if the book is set in 1943. She starts bullying Annabelle almost immediately and her bullying escalates quickly. When classmate Ruth gets really hurt, Betty blames Toby, a wondering WWI vet. Annabelle knows Toby is innocent and didn't do the things Betty accuses him of. When Betty goes missing however, it is hard to convince anyone else of his innocence. Annabelle decides it is up to her to find out what really happened to Betty and to clear Toby's name.
While Wolf Hollow was a pretty slow read to start with I ended up loving it in the end. It is not a book everyone will appreciate, but it is definitely one with awards potential. i really enjoyed the fact that Annabelle's parents listened to her and didn't dismiss her thoughts out of hand. They helped her because they knew it was the right thing to do. I thought there was a very timeless message about veterans, both how they survive war and how they are treated once they return. My one complaint was how one-dimensional Betty was. She was just mean and evil for no good reason. It was tragic what happened to her, but she didn't even redeem herself in the end. I wish her character would have had a bit more depth.

A coming-of-age/hero journey book set on a farm in the 1930's - yet still completely relatable. The characters are very well developed. Very realistic and completely engrossing yet without fluff. Bad, sad, hard things happen but strong character and people can persevere and grow. Classically Newbery material.
Excellent. Reminds me of To Kill a Mockingbird in a way where everyone considers someone to be guilty for a crime just because they're the town outcast. Strong female narrator who shows the importance of compassion, bravery, and integrity. This was such a fantastically written story, I couldn't put it down.
The audio version of this book is great. I was surprised by the level of violence in the story so that's why I'd consider this to be more of a YA book than a book for children. Although kids deal with bullying, this actually lead to accusations of attempted murder.
Annabelle and her younger brothers deal with physical harassment doled out by a new teen girl at school, Betty Glengarry. Betty was actually pretty sadistic in her techniques. When Annabelle's best friend is irreversibly injured, Annabelle tries to get the adults to see that Betty is the problem. But the people in town have come to place their suspicions on a war veteran, Toby, who wanders the woods.
Betty goes missing and the sheriff begins to look for Toby. Can Annabelle find Betty, protect Toby and stop Betty from hurting anyone else? Or will an innocent man take the fall for Betty?
