As a huge Harry Potter fan, I've been looking forward to this book for months and I really hate to say that I was disappointed. I felt that the script format really took away from any potential that the story might have had. That, combined with a plot that just fell flat, deprived this story from the magic that the other Harry Potter books always had.
I love that Albus is on a different path. He's in Slytherin and his best friend is a Malfoy; however, his motivation for his actions was questionable at best. Furthermore, the altering of time and Delphi being Voldemort's daughter was just such a stereotypical plot move. It felt devoid of creativity, which is surprising because we all know that J.K. Rowling usually has infinite creative potential. There were also contradictions with the other books: Why is snape so nice? Why is polyjuice so easy to brew? Why is Ron portrayed as a bumbling idiot?
To me, this just didn't feel like a true continuation of Harry's story. It felt like mediocre fanfiction written for the theater. Personally, I'm planning to erase this from my memory and let Harry's future 19 years later remain a mystery.

Certainly not as good as the originals but you just can't help getting sucked into the world of all the characters you love!

I found it difficult to begin with. Some of Act One was farfetched even for the magical world but I was happy that it seemed to pick up in Act Two. I wont add any spoilers here but I must say I was disappointed that I had felt the development of a ship that was never actualised. Oh well more food for the plot bunnies.

I really liked the ideas behind this book. It was very easy to read because of the format and I finished quickly. I will however say the format made the book very choppy. I felt like I was missing so much from the story. I wish I could have learned more about Albus’ time at school and how it affected him. We only got very brief glimpses in to that.
I also feel the book was very derivative of the series itself and that it felt like a play at nostalgia. There really wasn’t anything as far as new ideas. Just old ones being used in different ways. It almost felt like fan fiction rather than an extension of the actual series.
I would love to get the story written in JK Rowling’s traditional style and made longer. I think she is brilliant and has a gift with words.

This is a play script and it should be rated as such. I would also like to note that I found the epilogue of Deathly Hallows unrealistic and stupid enough that I've pretended for 9 years that it didn't exist, because otherwise it would have ruined the entire book for me.

The Cursed Child makes the epilogue acceptable and for that alone it deserves 4 stars. Harry's life is not perfect, despite the glossy picture painted at the end of Hallows. He's not doing a great job at being a parent, he's neglecting his duties at work and he is generally just like he was as a teenager, but older - this is not a bad thing. He is true to his character, and the way his experiences have shaped him. He is, still, pretty fucked up.

There are bits that bother me, and make me cringe a little, when it comes to the plot and the behaviour and speech of Albus and Scorpius, but overall it's good and I'm excited to see the play in November. I expect that it will be much better on stage.

I'm so sad to be rating a Harry Potter book so low! The main rule I find when it comes to plot - having characters go back in time over and over is not that exciting! It's just annoying. I didn't love the characters and of course, missed J.K. Rowling's writing style. I understand it's a play, so that makes it more of the bare minimum when it comes to writing, but still found it very boring and cheesy to read. The plot was not as mature as the original book series. The characters were more childish and the villain more "cartoony." Very unimpressed.

This had a great idea behind it, but first it was written as a play which wasn’t really so bad except I think it would have been much better as a book. Also, I would have liked to know what happened to some of the other characters from the original books. I felt, too, that Ron’s character turned into a bit of an idiot
