Searing and poetic, Mailhot's memoir alternates between the ways people hurt us and the ways we inflict pain on others.
"Making Indian women inhuman is a problem for me. We've become too symbolic and never real enough."
Heartbreaking and raw. A beautifully written memoir.
I just wanted her to stop talking to the shitty guy the whole time T-T Perhaps it’s the way it’s being told as a retelling of past events, combined with the general lack of agency Native and mentally ill people face… but it felt like endless bad things were happening with no respite or takeaway. Just not a book I can take anything away from other than “god damn 😬).
I'm amazed at how beautifully raw this memoir is. Heart Berries is a heartbreaking tale of loss, identity, illness, and struggle. It's a story woven artfully by a reluctant storyteller in denial of and in pursuit of her own culture while balancing a tumultuous relationship and precarious mental health. Reading this memoir is like standing in the eye of Mailhot's personal hurricane: breathtaking, overwhelming, and beautiful.

I picked up this book from the library as they were showcasing books about and written by Native Americans in North America. Honestly, I don’t think this book is bad despite me not giving it the highest rating. It just wasn’t for me.
