interesting magic systen

plot twists could have been punchier

i might have given it 4 stars BUT it ended with a love triangle which everyone knows the ending to so argh WHY

i need to read the second book

The concept of this book was interesting, but the execution was lacking. I wanted more magic than we actually received, especially since the main tag line is that the characters carry the dead to the other side. Another thing I did not like was that it was so easy to disable a Bone Cryer. If they were supposed to be a secret society, how is so much known about them and how were their powers so easily taken? The romance was so/so. Personally, I didn’t ship the two together as much as should have been done. I did like the setting of the book and thought it was written beautifully and descriptively. The way the catacombs were written gave me the creeps!

I had a lot of mixed feelings about this book. Overall I believe I enjoyed it, but I'm not quite sure about the romance aspects of it.

The storyline was interesting, yet slow-paced at times (I occasionally caught myself skimming through overdone paragraphs that didn't appear to further the plotline by much). But it truly leaves you wanting to discover more about the Bone Crier universe and culture, which by my standards means that the author did a wonderful job world-building. I was drawn towards this book because the romance and fantasy aspects fall in line with my typical reads (and the amazing cover art), yet I was pleasantly surprised it broke a lot of YA clichés that I typically fall for. I don't feel like there were "love-at-first-sight" sparks that almost all young adult characters push upon their characters when meeting the love interest (even with enemies to lovers). I feel like that first hook is what draws a lot of readers in, so if you are looking specifically for those romance sparks, then this story might not be for you, but if you are more interested in the plot then suggest you give Bone Crier's Moon a try. The friendships and plot twists definitely make it an interesting read!

Looping back around to the romance- I just wasn't feeling it. I think by attempting to avoid clichés and make the build-up more slow burn (which is a good idea in my opinion) something went wrong and the romance just lost all of its realism. The main love interest shared so much more chemistry with with one of the side characters than with the main character- and something tells me that their romance is not destined to last. It came off as one minute they hated each other, and the next they were willing to give up their lives fighting for each other. I might be going too harsh on this- but I just couldn't see that relationship ever working out, no matter how much I liked both characters.

To summarize- I loved world- hated the romance. I'm definitely interested in reading the sequel, just to see what amazing plot twists the author creates and how doomed this romance is.

Fuck Cas

I'm not a huge fantasy fan but I occasionally find things that interest me. In the case of this book, the relationships were really the thing I was invested in rather than the magic system. Magic systems depending on how they're presented and explained can be a hit or a miss for me.

Someone described the characters as melodramatic and yes I definitely agree with that. They were all teenagers being driven by prejudice and that causes a lot of confusion when they all meet. It seemed to go along rather predictably at first and then shoehorned a lot in at the end in order to set up the next book in the series, but it felt too rushed.

Overall 3 stars. It wasn't boring but it's not my cup of tea.

I'm too old for this.

I loved this! So different from everything else popular at the moment with the basis in French folk tales rather than the known! I loved the shock twist ending! I was devastated to learn that book 2 isn't out yet!!!So I'm going to leave myself a little spoilers summary below to remember.
SPOILERSS

Odiva was obviously bad news. Sabine changed her personality too quick from vegetarian to killer. Odiva jumped into the Underworld to be with her lover with flute 1. Sabine and Ailesse are sisters. Bastion and Ailesse love each other but he isn't her Amori! Like mother like daughter! Kaz is the Amori and he has ALSO kidnapped Ailesse and taken her bones while she has a broken leg. (Guys suck!) Bastion got stabbed and is healing with Marcel and Jule. Sabine rocks up to join forces. Sabine has a jackal bone and flute 2 but has not done her right of passage. Ailesse has 11 months left but this seems very YA so doubt there'll be baby making. Still don't know who killed Bastion's dad.
