This book is a bit difficult to rate because I enjoyed it but also didn't. The parts that are five stars are for the mysterious atmosphere and chilling and haunting story; however, it becomes a bit predictable and boring. The story takes place in the present with flashbacks to events that caused this little town to be cursed by the Swan Sisters. I wanted to know more about the sisters and other elements of the town that were mentioned, more than what was happening to the characters in the present story. If you are reading for dark romance and mystery vibes, it will do the trick.

The setting, the mystery, and the spooky vibes really sold this one for me. The writing was so seamless and I felt like I was really invested in the story, even when some of the clues seemed obvious. It was a nice pace with crumbs of information throughout the book rather than a heavy handed backstory right at the beginning. Definitely would recommemd reading this in the fall around Halloween, even though the story takes place in the summer.

This book was AMAZING. I went into it thinking that I wouldn’t like it much, but it ended up surprising me. The ambience of this book is impressive, it gave me “Hocus Pocus” vibes, mostly because of the Swan sister and their curse, but also because of the spooky, misterious elements that the author put into the story that really reminded me of the movie.

I found the chapters about the sisters’ past so interesting. While I was reading I kept wanting to know more and more about their story and how everything ended up being as it is. I also really enjoyed the chapters about Penny and Bo in the present, because Shea Ernshaw was always giving us hints as if saying “ Hey, there’s more to this than you know”. Even the main caracter “kept secrets” from the readers, we were left in the dark for more than 200 pages to then find out that we are reading not from Penny’s perspective, but from Hazel, one of the Swan sisters, which made everything much more interesting, in my opinion.

The author wrote this book beautifully. I felt like her writing was a big part of my reading experience. I was constantly highlighting lines, gaping at the pages. There are two paragraphs that stood out me:

“Sometimes I think this island is a magnet for bad things, the center of it all. Like a black hole pulling us toward a fate we can’t prevent. And other times I think this island is the only thing keeping me sane, the only familiar thing I have left.
Or maybe it’s me that’s the black hole. And everyone around me can’t help but be swallowed up, drowned and trapped in my orbit. But I also know that there’s nothing I can do to change it. The island and I are the same.”

It’s funny to think about this specific part after I’ve read the entire book, because now I know it was Hazel talking and know about the bond she developed to the island because of Owen. I just think that this whole story is beautiful.

Also the last two chapters made me so happy. I knew from the start that the sisters would end up dead, but I thought the book would end tragically, with maybe Bo and Penny both dead as well. But the way
it actually ended...I didn’t know I needed it until I read it. I was amazed when I found out that Hazel still wonders through the island and Bo feels her there.

Overall this book was FANTASTIC! It exceeded
my expectations and I can’t wait to read more books by Shea Ernshaw!

We are in the month of October and Halloween is approaching and, of course, this month my readings are dedicated to this genre. The wicked deep is perfect for this time. I am in love with the subject of witches and this book has it ALL. Do you like witches, Salem trials, curses and possessions? Well, this book is for you.

In this book we meet three young sisters who in 1822 arrive in a town called Sparrow. There, they are executed for witchcraft when the villagers believe they are bewitching the men of the place. Since then, they return every year during the month of June and have the bodies of three young women to drown boys their age as revenge. Then we meet today, with Penny, a girl who lives on the island of the lighthouse and, when she meets a boy named Bo, she gets involved with the Swan sisters.

The plot hooks you from the first moment. It is written from different situations, on one hand we are in the present in the mind and life of Penny, on the other hand, there are chapters in the middle that go back in time and give you clues to know what is happening in the present. It seems to me a very ingenious way to keep people's attention. In addition, it is very well written. The main characters are very enigmatic. We find that each one of them has their motivations and their tangled secrets that are discovered as the story progresses and that makes the story intriguing.

In conclusion, it is the perfect book for this era. It has intrigue and a convoluted plot but written so well that it does not make it hard to read. In addition, it is self-concluding, so it is perfect for those who like to start and finish a story in the same book.

Thoughts, thought. I have mix feelings. But the plot was good everything was good. Romance? For me, Not so much goodness (fuck you Hazel. "Love you still" my ass) But it was interesting and has a good plot twist.

Creepy & chilling. Atmospheric. Not your average romance.

I rather liked this book.*
There’s a lot of layers to unfold, full of history and mystery, ghosts and legends. There’s a curse on the seaside town of Sparrow, and not everyone is going to make it out alive.

Though the “reveal” isn’t unpredictable, I still didn’t know how it was all going to end, and I found the ending wistful and satisfying. Though the romance was a bit insta and intense, it kept just enough of a balance for me to still enjoy it (and that’s saying a lot. Romance many times supersaturates and ruins books for me).

I look forward to reading future works by this author.

*After further reflection, I did bump down my review from 5 to 4 stars. So it’s safe to assume my true feelings lie somewhere in the middle.
