the last several chapters are carrying these 3 stars on their own because the rest of this book was incredibly slow. the first 50% was essentially storytime world-building in the desert and as enthralled as i was by the world this was set in, there came a point where i was like, "when are they getting to that damn city?"

i also couldn't buy into the insta-lovey romance and i found myself thinking that two of the other minor characters had a lot more chemistry than whatever was going on between nahri and dara (and i was right, thank you very much).

pacing and romance aside, i loved how rich the lore and politics were. I've heard that the next two books are a lot better so i'm holding out hope because the ending was really good.

While not written by a person from that part of the world, this is an attempt at writing fantasy based on another country's heritage and mythology that works. It was obvious that it was written by an actual Muslim from its treatment of religion in the lives of its characters. Aaaaand, I had a blast reading it as a fantasy novel. Very much recommended for fans of Rebel of the Sands so that they can upgrade the quality of their cross-cultural fantasy consumption.

i'm glad that it got better after halfway through the book. i was perpetually confused by the magic system and the way that the characters told about it all at a time ... honestly i'd prefer to understand the information one at a time. i almost dnf it bc i was easily bored by the story but worry not, it got more exciting as i dove deeper into the world. one of the things i appreciated the most was the representation of the muslim characters, the familiarity i felt was just <3. also alizayd was so precious i adored him so much??? this series has such an intriguing plot, i will def continue this series sometime later!
