After swearing to myself that I was going to stick to my own rules about reading ebooks only sparingly, here I am again, devouring a Psy-Changeling book. In this installment, we get the story of Ashaya and Dorian. On the surface, Ashaya seems to be the perfect Psy, brilliant and fully ensconced in Silence. However, there's far more to her than meets the eye, as Dorian finds out when he becomes responsible for her protection after she defects, exposing some of the Council's darkest secrets in the process. But is it enough to help Dorian overcome his hatred for the Psy?

Every time that I pick one of these books up, I'm convinced that this is going to be the one that gets repetitive and boring. But it seems like the Psy-Changeling series hits the tropes that I enjoy very well, and I'm nowhere near getting tired of them. I think it helps that Ashaya is actually quite different from Sascha and Faith, in that her motivations for keeping to Silence are very different from theirs. She's a far more emotionally connected character than any of the other Psy we've met so far, despite her outward seeming, which makes her relationship with Dorian feel just different enough from the romances that we've had before to be satisfying. There are also some interesting parallels between her situation and Dorian's that make their connection more intriguing that I might have otherwise expected.

This book also advances the world-building and plotting quite a bit. Ashaya's work was very important to the Council, so when she exposes it, it sets a lot of events in motion. We start to see additional factions within the Psy and the humans, as well as meeting some more of the Changeling players who I imagine will play a larger part in later books. I think one of the things that keeps me coming back to this series so readily is the way that they're showing the beginnings of a revolution, another trope that I'm very much into. Romance and politics? I am in.

Dorian's story just holds a special place in my heart.
Loved him, Ashaya and Keenan!
Also, the political plot keeps getting better with each book.

Ooh this was a good one. Dorian has always been one of my faves and I really enjoyed his story. Traumatized by the murder of his sister by a Psy killer in the first book, Dorian's dark side is threatening to take over. Then a Psy defector is dropped into his territory and Dorian has to deal with his attraction to a woman who is part of a race that he despises.
Ashaya Aleine has defected from the Psy in a bid to save her son and bring heat down on the Psy Council.

Both of the main characters in this one are well developed and strong. I felt that the attraction between them was believable as was the conflict. Dorian struggles with his attraction towards Ashaya because he sees it as a betrayal to his sister. Ashaya is trying to hide her emotions in order to protect her son. I like that Shaya doesn't take any crap from Dorian but he also doesn't let her hide behind her Psy shields. It really felt like they had an emotional connection in this one. One of my faves.

Nalini Singh has created such an amazing world with her Psy-Changeling series. Her world has such depth and her characters draw me in with each story that I just can’t get enough. I am actually happy that I discovered this series late because it means I can grab and glom through so many stories. Each story does build from the last so I do not recommend reading this as a standalone but this series is worth it so go back to the beginning.

Ashaya has been hiding in the world of the Psy, burying her emotions deep to save the son that she shouldn’t care about. She finds a way to save him and other children but must cut herself off from the Psy Net and possibly lose her life. DarkRiver sniper Dorian doesn’t know what it is about Ashaya but he admires this woman who put her life on the line for children. As they work to take down the Psy responsible for endangering human children a danger from Ashaya’s past tracks them. Can the trust and blossoming love that this Psy and Changeling have developed save them? Fun read, can’t wait to continue the series!
