Bit of a guilty pleasure, this one. I first read the Elenium when I was 17/18, and found the entire set, and David Eddings in general, highly entertaining and a bit of fresh air. Revisiting it at 43, the story was a little on the simple side, always following Sparhawk, and there was little in the way of character development. But, the 18 year old in me still enjoyed the victories, petty insults, and the fact that the heroes of the story never really seem to be in any peril. More like a dessert than a main course. But there is nothing wrong with that.

Book Three of the ELENIUM is fantasy on a truly epic scale, in which the Pandion Knight Sparhawk must finally use the power of the jewel.

Aided by the goddess Aphrael, Sparhawk and his band of companions have recovered the magical jewel Bhelliom – the Sapphire Rose – from the cave of the troll-dwarf Ghwerig. Now they have the power to wake and cure Ehlana, the young Queen of Elenia.

But while they were seeking Bhelliom, great forces of evil moved into the power vacuum left behind. The unholy triple alliance between Otha, degenerate sorcerer-king of the Zemochs, the renegade Pandion Knight Martel, and Annias, traitorous Primate of Cimmura, threatens to overrun all of Eosia. In returning to Cimmura to wake Ehlana, Sparhawk risks delivering the Sapphire Rose into the hands of his enemies, who will use it to give the evil god Azash dominion over the whole world.

To stop them they may have to unleash the full power of the jewel, but no one can predict whether the world itself will survive such an event.

THE SAPPHIRE ROSE is the gripping, brilliant conclusion to THE ELENIUM, a panoramic tale of a conflict between good and evil that envelops an entire continent.

From Publishers Weekly

This final volume of the Elenium trilogy, which began with The Diamond Throne , is also set in a magic world in turmoil. Here we follow the Pandion Knight Sparhawk as he uses the infinitely powerful sapphire-rose jewel Bhelliom to awaken Cimmura's queen Ehlana from the poison administered by the primate Annias, who seeks control over her kingdom and, in particular, her treasury. Annias is supported in his bid to become archprelate of the Church of the Elenes by the Elder God Azash, imprisoned by his fellow gods and seeking release through the powers of Bhelliom. After Sparhawk is coerced into marriage by Ehlana, he sets out with his companions, including the Styric seer Sephrenia, for the Holy City of Chyrellos, to rescue his people from destruction by Azash and his archpriest Otha. Having saved the city from its besieger, Martel, the small band of adventurers must proceed to Azash's lair to vanquish him and safeguard their world. Eddings adroitly mixes the exalted with the mundane in a tale that should satisfy his many fans.

Another childhood favorite which hasn't necessarily held up as well as it should have: all the things a ten-year-old overlooks (weird gender politics, obnoxious child-goddesses, and some really descriptive discussions of entrails and gory death) were a little more obvious this go-around. Oddly, the other two books in the trilogy didn't seem to be available as ebooks, so I just went ahead and read this one first.
