4.5. The next time I hear that YA "lacks depth" I'm gonna show them this OMG

Synopsis: Daunis Fontaine has never quite fit in on her Ojibwe Reservation, but she decides to stay close to home for college to support her family. When a new boy on her brother’s hockey team, Jamie, catches her interest, it seems like a break in a hard time. But, as she starts to fall for him, more and more secrets about him and her own home begin to arise, and she is recruited by the FBI to investigation of a new drug. Agreeing to go undercover, Daunis has ended up in a situation far more dangerous and complicated than she could have imagined.

Thoughts: Ok this book is absolutely worth every bit of hype it’s getting. All of the characters are so well written, and the author conveys such a complicated sense of loyalty and conflict through the main character. I honestly didn’t see the reveal coming (maybe it was obvious I don’t know I was too wrapped up in just reading it!) and so I was really surprised! Definitely a must read for literally anyone and everyone.

First, let’s start with the cover. What a beauty! I appreciate Boulley sharing the culture and lifestyle of Native American life with us. It’s something I don’t believe I’ve had the pleasure of finding in a book so that was a treat! The writing of this book was overall good but the plot was truly all over the place. Jessica Woodbury explains it very well in her review with a few spoilers. It was so much to keep up with at times. I kept having to remind myself who a character was, how they related to Daunis, and why their story was pertinent. The romance between the main characters fell a little flat. I think teenage me would have loved this book, but now with almost 500 pages and so many repeat thoughts, some pieces could have been condensed. The ending got a bit exciting. Also, I never saw any warnings about all the violence in this book. From the many deaths to the sexual violence, it’s something I truly wasn’t expecting and some may want a heads up. I don’t think I found myself forcing my way through, so I give it a solid 3/5 ⭐️
