Book two in the Sugar Maple series is very good. The way the story is continued is really well done and makes sense with the original story and characters, but with a new story line and different challenges for Chloe and Luke to face.

Chloe's magic has finally come in, and she has won Luke, so she figures it's only a matter of time until the required daughter comes along to fulfill the prophecy and keep the town where it is.

But, of course, that would be too simple! Instead, the ex-wife Luke never mentioned shows up in town, telling him that Steffie, the daughter he ALSO never mentioned - and who died - has been calling for both of them to help her.

It turns out that Isadora, who's still banished but trying hard to come back to take the town through the mist, has captured Steffie's spirit and will only release her if Chloe releases Isadora from the banishment, which is really not a good idea.

The book is very fast-paced and exciting and the various supporting characters all choose sides in the Chloe versus Isadora battle, which makes for even more drama. The one thing you should be aware of if you read this one is that it does end in a cliff-hanger, so you'll want to be ready to have the third book handy once you finished this one. But it's a fun paranormal romance and a good read.

I loved the first book in the series and knew that this was going to be a little bit of a letdown, so I adjusted my expectations and went for it. I liked this follow-up to Casting Spells as the characters developed a bit and Chloe's powers grew. I did start to mix up the good guys and the bad guys a bit, which turned out to kind of be part of the plot in a roundabout way. It wasn't the first book and it's clearly a set-up for book 3, which I hear is awesome, but this one also has its good points and is worth reading.

I put down my dystopian novel because I thought that the world was a bit stressful and unpredictable, and I could do with something lighter. This was a fun story that gave me a few laughs. However, it also contained a very bizarrely placed and really bad sex scene. I would like to request that no author ever uses the word "shaft" in a sex scene again. I felt like Barbara Bretton suddenly remembered that she needed to include another sex scene in the book, wrote it in two minutes, and just randomly inserted into the story. Perhaps her editor rang her at half past four on a Friday and said, "I need a sex scene by the end of the day!"

Second book in the Sugar Maple series. The story arc continues in this book. Chloe and Luke’s relationship is tested when his ex-wife shows up in Sugar Maple needing his help. The town freaks out because another human has arrived. Many townspeople are siding with Isadora and Isadora is wreaking havoc from within her banishment. Fun times.

The universe created here continues to be interesting though Chloe is a bit too whiny in this book for my tastes. There’s lots of action in this book and a few hold-your-breath scenes. The book ends on a huge cliffhanger that evidently segues into book three.

This installment had more "meat" to it than the first book. Since the business of getting the boy and girl together was taken care of in the first book, we could move on to throwing a few troubles their way and seeing how they handle them. Fair warning for those like me who hate to wait: this book has a cliffhanger ending, and as of 24 Apr 2010 I couldn't find any information about a release date for the next book in the series.

I really liked the approach to the old love meets new love--nicely non-cliched. Not as fond of the cliff-hanger ending.

This was the follow-up book to Casting Spells and it was definitely a page-turner as it approached the end.
Luke and Chloe are seemingly happy in Sugar Maple until the night when Isadora (banished at the end of the last book) reappears at a town meeting. As they uncover the wounded, the citizens find Karen Mackenzie, Luke's ex-wife is in town. She is claiming that their dead daughter Steffie is making contact with her and told her to contact Luke. Chloe is thrown into a tailspin because she did not know Luke had a daughter. As the story progresses, they find out that Isadora is holding Steffie hostage in the spirit realm and will release her in return for the banishment being lifted. Chloe not only needs to fight the battle with Isadora but also needs to fight half of the town which no longer feels Chloe is working int heir best interests.
The last sentence of a book is a shocker!

Read it today while waiting to be discharged from hospital after a procedure on my lower back. Damned cannula in my hand stopping knitting, also high fuzziness from the anesthetic.

I did enjoy this, not sure if I've read book 1 in this series, all about a human sheriff and his lover who used to be powerless and without whom the town of Sugar Maple, Vermont would be all-too visible to mundane humanity. Into this mix comes his ex-wife and the ghost of their daughter who is being used as a pawn by a certain Fae leader. Also has a lot of knitting references.
