I love this series so much. It is refreshing to have a female protagonist that is older than twenty.
Breena O'Rylee is one tough witch. She has had her share of bad luck in relationships and her ex husband had found a way to make sure that all of their debt went to her while he got the houses including the one that her grandmother had owned.
Befriended by a Bigfoot named Eric, a Fairy named Kinkly, the Fae king himself Crash, her ex husbands cousin Corb who was the black sheep of the family, Suzy a Siren, a Skeleton named Robert and a river princess named Feish.
Crash had bought her Grandma's house from a local auction and was allowing Breena and her friends to live in the house, along with her deceased grandma's ghost.
I love the humor in these books and the action. There is always plenty of action in this series.
In this book Breena must confront a blood Demon, while trying to figure out who had murdered her parents and her Grandma. No easy task when you are also dealing with a Bigfoot who thinks he is in love with a fairy and a Siren that has a crush on the Bigfoot. Nothing good would come from all of that Breena just knew it.
Action packed, a page turner for sure, I read it in one sitting, this is a book you devour, not one you will read slowly over several days.
If you love a strong older female lead character, who has a wicked sense of humor, attempts to cuss but auto correct always "Ducks" it up, if you love paranormal, a little bit of love thrown in for good measure plus have I mentioned the action? Snap this one up you will not regret it.

Well, I rounded the last book up to a reluctant 4 stars, and I'm done with that. This gets two.

Every problem has just continued to build.

Her ex is a bag of shit and she still lets him get away with treating her like garbage. Yeah, yeah,
Spoilerhe's dead now. But not because she stood up for herself or made him pay for what he's done. And now she never will. And she's still letting his fucking ghost manipulate and talk shit about her. Why is she helping him? Bind him to some fucking toilet paper and flush him!
She's just so unbelievably fucking spineless.

And no, I don't find the ducking to be cute. And it's fucking constant.

The Corb situation just gets worse and worse. He still lies to her, manipulates her, sent her in to deal with fucking Annie without a fucking heads up! And she just rolls over for all of it. She sucks up his constant mistreatment of her, and every fucking time, no matter how far he has crossed the line yet a-fucking-gain, she brushes it off in like 1 second. I hate him, and her constantly swallowing every speck of his shit has made me start to hate Bree.

Also, fucking lol that Corb is one of
Spoilerthe council's top investigators. He's a fucking moron. In every book of this series, he's gotten played by the bad guys and made a constant chain of bad choices. He's a fucking moron. If he's one of their top guys, they must all be fucking terrible. No wonder Savannah is being overrun with evil. He was working for the evil councilman in the last 2 books! He's the fucking reason Alan was able to fuck Bree over!

Corb belittles and undercuts Bree just as much as Alan ever did. And he lies to her and manipulates her into dangerous situations without informing her or asking for her help. I want to underscore this: as far as I am concerned, Corb is worse than Alan. But apparently that's all okay with Bree because he's hot.

Fucking eyeroll.

And then in this book, Crash has started to piss me off. What the fuck is his problem? And why did he do that, down by the goblins? I don't think he meant the house stuff the way Bree took it, but he was definitely being a douchebag.

The only guy I like in this series is Robert, and I'm half-convinced Robert is related to her. So, meh.

I don't know that I'll continue with the series. At this point, I doubt it. I don't want to see yet more of Alan dominating her life with this police shit. And her continuing to happily roll with being treated this way. It's fucking tiresome.

Fun, Wild, Entertaining

This 3rd installment of the series takes larger steps into Bree’s Savannah and the ride is fun! We meet ghoulish demons and goblins that bring twists in the story all the way to the last chapter.

While Midlife Demon Hunter, the third volume in Shannon Mayer’s Forty Proof series included some of the entertaining elements from the first two volumes, I found this title to be a bit lackluster.

The plot was messy and disjointed. As in previous installments, there was the “case” (hide the goblin’s paperwork) that served as the novel’s “A” plot. While Bree worked that case, she picked up additional clues/information regarding the supernatural power structure in Savannah, the shadow elements looking to take over the city, and the deaths of her parents and grandmother. Elements of the main plot/case made little sense, almost as if they were put into the story because . . . . reasons? Everything goblin related was dull, fortunately the background plot lines were interesting enough to keep me somewhat engaged in the story.
SpoilerI really want to learn what kind of magical being Bree is and what her powers are as well as learning who killed her parents and grandmother and why the demon stole gran’s ghost. The set up for those storylines seem promising.

Can we please just stop with the Crash-Bree-Corb drama? How many times are we going to go through the cycle of: I can’t trust him. But he’s hot and I really want to jump his bones. I think he likes me so it’s okay if we make-out like a couple of randy teenagers. Oh noes, he lied to me and now I can’t trust him. But he’s nice to me so let’s make-out. But he didn’t tell me this secret, so he’s not trustworthy. But he’s really hot. Rinse and repeat ad infinitum. It is becoming tedious. Sure, I understand that people (supernatural or otherwise) are complex beings and the relationships of all kinds (work, family, friends, lovers) are complicated, and of course there needs to be tension to keep the story engaging . . . but please, for goodness sake, find a different way/different types of tension rather than the same old tired cycle.

For a smart, no-nonsense woman – Bree makes some really stupid decisions. Really? Has she never heard the sentiment “Fool me once, shame on you; Fool me twice, shame on me”? How many times is she going to “fall” for one of Corb’s lies or Crash’s mind-games? At some point you’d think she’d overrule her lust/hormones and take a moment to think things through.

At this point, the only man that seems to genuinely care for Bree as a person is Robert. Sad, sweet, lovely Robert.

Also, can people stop keeping secrets when there is no good reason for keeping the secret? It’s one thing when Corb (or anyone else) is spelled and physically is unable to tell Bree something; it is another thing when he (or anyone else) purposefully keeps useful, and potential lifesaving information from Bree. This also goes for Bree not telling others what she’s learned or what she’s doing. Bree, girl – you finally found a tribe of your own that loves and accepts you . . . don’t shut them out.

SpoilerWhile Alan, who has always been portrayed as an abrasive, obnoxious lout, it was dialed up to eleven this time. Maybe being dead amplifies your personality traits – so the lout become extra lout-ish when dead? Or perhaps it is just that we are seeing him through Bree’s perspective, and now that she has some self-confidence and is out from under his control, she has the strength to see him as he really is? Either way – those sections were monotonous.

I did not like the fact that Feish, Suzy, and Eric were mostly sidelined this volume . . . they had little to do and less personality than in previous installments, serving as mere plot devices this installment.

Bridgette, while seemingly sweet, wasn’t really necessary. Especially if Bree . . . oh, I don’t know . . . .asked someone about goblins and goblin paperwork.

I did like seeing the council and it’s various members; and it was nice to have confirmation that the Hallows Group really is fraudulent.

What was the purpose of making Annie (the tarot reader) a member of the O’Sean family? So that Corb can reveal he once again is keeping secrets from Bree – with the secret being that he works for the enforcement arm of the council?

While I wasn’t not particularly fond of this installment, there were elements that I did enjoy. Ms. Mayer’s narrative dropped enough clues/bread crumbs to keep my interest and continue with the series.

I loved it. I feel like the series gets better with each book. Breena and her band of misfits seem to find trouble everywhere they turn. Is it weird that I want a Robert for myself? I can't wait to read more!

I absolutely love this series!! I have read all 3 books in 2 days. I'm not one to just do that. I haven't done that in 12 years! These books, for me, are different than your usual paranormal books. Bree is more realistic to me than other paranormal heroines. I guess because she is older (Which I love! ) and with that age come wisdom. Plus, she sometimes struggles with the more physical stuff and actually needs an advil or 20 afterwards! I really think if you enjoy reading the paranormal genre then you will love this whole series. Now, I just have to some how make it to December to read the next book * insert huge unhappy moan here*

3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

DUCKING - While I'm sure the author thought the whole ducking was cute and endearing, it is the most annoying thing to keep reading. We are all adults and a good swear is needed at time. Especially if this character is suppose to be fed up and starting a new from being a reserved person who didn't speak her mind.

BREE TREATEMENT - Its becoming harder to read how Breena continues to let others walk all over her. They lie and manipulate her and she still allows them in her life because they treat her slightly better than her ex. Corb lies and consistently manipulating situations. Thomas lying saying he helped her get rid of a spell but it was all a lie for her to owe the Hallows a favor. Sarge trying to kill and her just forgiving it. While I understand that she just got out of an abusive relationship and any slight improvement in treatment she sees as being treated well. I hope she starts to see her worth and stop allow others to treat badly. After her divorce she was all alone so now that she has some friend she is willing to put up with sub par treatment instead of cutting them off so she doesn't have to be alone.

LOVE TRIANGLE - The whole love triangle seems more for something to put on the page than it actually being something interesting, seems more distracting than anything. We want true connection not just you are so hot I can't think when you are around. Both option of men are sub par, compared to her ex a big upgrade but over all she can do better.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT/GROWTH - Healing is a process so I hope as she learns her true worth and gains confidence she starts to cut people out of her life that are toxic or don't prove to growing. She still has a lot of insecurities to work on, with having Eric there you would think she would use his services. She clearly needs it and it will help her character develop and create more depth. We are three books in and I don't feel like the characters are growing/developing or maybe it's too slow for us to notice differences from book to book. She has trust issues but always seems to pick the wrong person to trust. They told her not to go to Crash and she just believed what they said. Crash has been the only one who has always been upfront with her and has not lied. He deals in some bad things but he has never lied or manipulated her.

EX HUSBAND - While it was satisfying for her ex to be killed in a horrific way, it does not give a sense of justice for what was done to her. Nor does rights the wrong she had to endure. Life insurance that pays for the debt seems anticlimactic. Plus he's still around as a ghost being so annoying.

CONCLUSION - Even with all those things that I disliked in the book, the story over all was very intriguing. The world the author build pulls you in and you want to keep reading to find out what is next. Still so many unanswered question what is Bree? Who killed her family? Who are the mayor players? Maybe we will find out in the next book.

Paranormal fiction at its finest

Hilarious, action pact and one of the best in the series so far! So many things are going on her life it's hard to keep them straight. Bree is definitely a magnate for death and darkness, it seems to stick to her like glue. A lot of heat and sexual tension and I just want her to pick someone, even if that someone seems to be hot and cold and is making my head spin! Something is happening in Savannah and it's getting more dangerous every day. Everyone seems to want something from her, or want her to do something! I devoured this installment and I'm diving right into the next one! Another five star read for me!
