I am perplexed at the rave reviews (better than Agatha Christie?! Really?!) and overall unsatisfied with this book. I would read other books by this author as I enjoyed the style of writing and thought highly of the ability to describe a scene. But it wasn't enough for me to get why this story has hit so highly among so many. Someone read this so you can help me figure out what I don't get with this one.
After their marriage Hollywood star Katie Barstow and her husband take a group of their friends to Africa for a photography safari and things turn horribly wrong.
I picked up THE LIONESS because I’m a fan of Chris Bohjalian and, once again, he did not disappoint. Set in 1964, this book is part historical fiction and part thriller and I was hooked. I figured parts of the plot out but there was one twist I didn’t see coming. There are some social issues in the book so it would be a great book club selection.

I should have read the blurb. I was clearly not the target audience for this book and I had previously read other books by Chris Bohjalian which I’ve liked. I am an animal-loving, anti hunting and do not have patience for celebrity entitlement so clearly this book was not for me. I had no idea what I was expecting but not this carnage and death sprinkled book full of wars in countries so far removed from my reality that I did not enjoy at all. I had no empathy for this LA characters who put everyone in danger with a sense of entitlement driven by greed and money. The blatant racism explored in this book is jarring to this day and age even though the book was supposed tp have happened in 1964. I quit a few times and wished I had DFN this one. The only reason I finished it was because it was the book chosen for my book club this month.
This is super intense! Great book. The tricky thing is that there are so many characters to keep track of. It's an adventure!
Outstanding read. Involves nine friends, all from or closely connected to the world of Hollywood in the 1960s, on a photo safari to the Serengeti. They are kidnapped, and much of the book follows what happens next.
Brutal at times, but not in a graphic way. Be warned you may not be able to put it down…

Set in 1964, a safari with a Hollywood starlet on her honeymoon and a group of her friends gone wrong and the group is kidnapped by Russians mercenaries. Great premises but the story is told from the perspective of each person in the group, over 10 people and flips back and forth between present and past. This does help getting to know the character but there were too many characters. Too often the book goes back into the past of a character when just something exciting happened. At times, the story felt too violent, described in very graphic details and it is not a happy ending book.
I read that the book will be made into a TV series and I can see that this book will actually be better as a TV series.

I feel like this is one of those books where the large cast of characters made it so I didn't care as much about any individual person, or really connect with any of them more than the others, but the plot and the writing style kept me engaged.
