A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty by Joshilyn Jackson

Charming and I think this ties Never Have I Ever for my favorite Joshilyn Jackson novels. A story of three generations of women. Jackson gets the voice of each of these women (age 45, 30, and 15) right - including the one who has had a stroke. At the core is the love among these three women, and the lengths each will go. Each has secrets that lead the other two astray. It's a lovely story and I would love to know Ginny, Liza, and Mosey.

Edited to add after reading other reviews: Word to the wise, if you are a sensitive reader that who only likes characters who are outwardly "godly" (read: self-righteous), please don't read this book. This book features real people, without the self-righteous judgement that turns people away from church instead of toward it.

I would give it 3.5. i wish there were half stars for rating! Not the best writing and I think it started out slow. But it definitely picked up and had me guessing by the end.

Amazing story. This was one of those can't-put-down type books. I loved every single page!

This is the 2nd novel by Joshilyn Jackson that I have read and I am quickly becoming a fan. I actually listened to this as an audio book and she was the narrator of her book. She did a phenomenal job and I couldn’t wait to finish listening!

I really enjoyed this book! I loved how the chapters were told from the perspective of the three main characters, their voices really helped shape the story. I also like how there was some element of "mystery" to the story...we learn along with the characters which added a layer of suspense. This was my first Joshilyn Jackson book and I look forward to reading her other books.

Jackson has done it again.

I am a long-time fan of Joshilyn Jackson, as is noted here and here. Her writing takes me away into the worlds in her book, and the characters always feel so instantly like I've known them my whole life. Would it be weird to call her books "comfortable"? Because right from the prologue of this newest novel, I knew I was going to be stuck in my chair until the end.

Wow, was the drama in this story heavy! And powerful, like a punch to the stomach, or a terrible image you accidentally stumbled upon on the internet. I completely loved the characters. Poor Mosey and her search for who she is, her turmoil over being a teenager with a dysfunctional family. She was so realistically wise beyond her years. Big was another I enjoyed immensely, as a mother who is trying to protect her children and her heart amidst an unspeakable crime. And whoo-boy, the dialog that came out of Lawrence's mouth weakened my knees! Once the clues started falling into place, I found myself feverishly turning the pages for more. A fantastic story by a much loved author.

I liked this book - but I liked Big and Liza's chapters significantly more than I liked Mosey's, and that's why it doesn't get 5 stars from me. With Mosey it seems like Jackson is trying too hard to create the perfectly quirky teenage narrator - which is a shame, since Mosey has a lot going for her. Roger and Patti are excellent, and worth reading Mosey's narration a little more thoroughly. The payoff to the big mystery of the book is also definitely worth the read, as every time I thought I was ahead of it, I wasn't really.

The three Slocumb girls are a lovable, strong-minded, and entertaining trio - once the drama starts, you won't be able to put this book down. My only complaint is that the first few chapters of the novel are slow with somewhat distant characters. Keep reading, it gets better!

The story line is great but I didn't care for her writing style. She captures the essence of some characters. It I especially did not feel like she did Big any justice.... Her character didn't make a lot of sense to me. A quick, engaging read but I could've done without some of the language.
