This series is high fantasy, involved, and rich. I love it. It is not a quick, racy read. -So if you pick it up, be prepared to invest, track multiple story-lines, and become familiar with a half a dozen chief characters and their companions. The action in it is steady and not nearly as encumbered as Sanderson’s works (IYKYK). This is a satisfying sequel to Of Blood and Fire.

Wow...what a step up from book 1 of this series (which I gave 4 stars and was good).  The action and plot are non-stop, and like many great sequels, this picks up right after the first one ends...races 90 miles an hour, and ends with a climax that will shake your bones.

Cahill's prose is better, the plot and execution is better, and  you cant tell that not only is he coming into himself more as an author, but the story is going in its own direction, moving away from some of the stories that inspired book 1.

An excellent addition to the series and I look forward to book 3.

A great sequel. Much more adventure compared to the first book. Of Blood and Fire needed to set the scene and build us up to something, where now it can just flow without too much explanation. The battle scenes were easy to read and flowed well, so much so that all of a sudden you'd see that you read through 20 or so pages in a flash. This was a bigger book and ended in a bit of a cliffhanger. I personally cannot wait to hear more about Ella and Fardas story. Bottom line, should someone continue this series after reading this book: YES. I'm taking a quick break in between this and the next book just to cleanse my pallet with a short biography read before I dive into the absolute beast of a book that is Of War and Ruin.

THIS. IS. EPIC. FANTASY.

"There are demons within us all that we must face. They only ever surface when we are at our lowest because they are not strong enough to challenge us at our highest."

I finally finished Of Darkness and Light and it was a ride. It was a definite improvement over the previous book. The previous book wasn't bad it just felt safe/familiar. Book 2 exploded into a massive story with a lot of plot threads and a lot more characters thrown at the reader. Good thing Ryan writes like the flash because if he has a lot of ground to cover.

Ryan went into his own direction and started building more of his world as well as building some characters. A lot happens especially in the second half of the book. My favorite character for once is not the main character which usually never happens I always latch onto the main character but I am more interested in Rist. I found myself wishing it was his chapters I was reading. I enjoyed the other POV characters I was just leaning towards Rist.

He decided to do something I hate in a story. Sparing someone's life for plot convenience, it was obvious what was happening. I wasn't upset that he didn't kill this character I was mad at the reasoning for sparring this character. Without giving too much away they spared this persons life because they wanted to keep their "honor" but literally like 2 pages earlier they killed some people in a way. He kept them alive for plot convenience which I had a problem with.

Other than that point I enjoyed all of the book. My only other complaint is just the sheer amount of POV characters it was a lot higher than the previous book and I wasn't able to spend as much time with some other characters that I wanted to spend time with. Sometimes the POV would change mid chapter which I wasn't a fan of. I am excited to get to the behemoth of a book that is Of War And Ruin.
