it is really hard for me to say how i feel about this book. on the one hand, the general plot and end reveal are great. i love the queer as misunderstood cryptid metaphor, the lesbian sasquatch protectors as a concept, the whole island having a secret thing. but also…and i say this as someone who reads a lot of horror… some of these deaths were mean and didn’t fit tonally to me. especially casey’s. i kinda get that i am supposed to dislike her cause she’s a reality show producer? and kind of a jerk i guess? but the author did not make her enough of a POS to deserve her disturbing death. maybe it’s just me being sensitive to that type of kill, but that was so mean to me. but not as mean as them shooting mike the camera guy in the head? or killing vanessa off-page after LM sacrificed herself for her despite their feud? the deaths don’t seem justified, especially when we’re moving toward some kind of character development just to kill them off in the same chapter?? it’s like i know the book didn’t want me to like the girls-minus-renee and all the men in this book but it did not give me a good enough reason to? i mean the racism is pretty bad. and jeremy sucked and honestly i liked his death because in a misandrist at heart. but it kinda felt like they ultimately all had to die because they weren’t queer? and i’m gay!!! and renee was not fleshed out enough for me. was she a somewhat-suicidal/maybe-sociapath just cause she didn’t realize she was gay?????? and she was spared because patricia could sense her gayness and she just wants gays to live with her on her island??? i mean i don’t blame her but there’s so many questions, i think this book would benefit from another 100 pages of development. and i mean don’t do the redeeming-right-before-killing-them thing either cause it’s just a waste??? i don’t know yall. i both really loved this book and was disappointed by it?? all i know is i do stan patricia.

This book ended up being a little too fluffy for me: flat characters, leaning heavily on gore, and uncritical "commentary" about pop culture that wasn't too profound; the book mostly just shit on influencer culture and the people who participate in it without meaningfully investigating it. The queer relationship was also pretty flat and unexamined.

Because I’m a happy wee paranormal sad sack, I knew exactly what this story would be about simply from the title alone and that’s why I wanted to read it!! And it did not disappoint. Think The Bachelor meets The Missing 411 conspiracies. What a combo! Reading this on the back of two duds was great timing as it was funny and satirical and just an all round good time of a book! I had to giggle at the alternative social media platforms - ‘glamstapix’ and ‘click clack’. Oh and mixed media features you say? Thumbs up from me! This is a really easy read and a great wee yarn about the toxicity of reality TV for all involved (crew, contestant AND viewers) and that good things happen when gals look out for each other! Also shout out for some queer rep in there too.
