I haven't read the actual novel but definitely motivated to after this graphic novel adaptation! I love the thematic usage of color and how eloquently balanced between the text:: images is. It feels complete (although that cliffhanger ending frustrates me like the typical classics book!) and I understood the premise without being suffocated with text.
Graphic: Animal death, Child death, Death, Violence, Blood, Kidnapping, Dysphoria, War, Classism
As always Russell and his confederates are miraculous illustrators, but sadly, I found the world of The Giver unfolded very tediously and I just couldn't find any emotional investment in the story.
I really enjoyed this way to tell the story. I liked the black-and-white drawings that switched to color when necessary.
It's been a few years since I've read [b:The Giver|3636|The Giver (The Giver, #1)|Lois Lowry|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1342493368l/3636._SY75_.jpg|2543234] but from what I remember, the graphic novel followed the original text fairly well. I loved the graphic interpretations by [a:P. Craig Russell|38328|P. Craig Russell|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1416845206p2/38328.jpg]. Bringing a beloved novel like The Giver to life is not an easy task, but the illustrations that accompanied this story were extremely well done. I was completely transported to the world of Jonas and was reminded, yet again, how terrifying it can be to think about a utopian life.
One of the things that stands out to me the most from The Giver is how Jonas slowly develops the ability to see color. The way P. Craig Russell integrated color into this graphic novel was beautifully done. I was intrigued to read about the techniques he used to get the color and images to appear the way he envisioned. All in all, this was a beautiful new way to experience the story of Jonas and The Giver.
I would recommend this book for middle school readers on up.

I read the original book 8 years ago and only remembered bits and pieces from then. I really enjoyed this in graphic novel format and was happy to read, in the notes at the end, that this adaptation follows the original very closely.
I feel bad for saying this because I've met Lois Lowry before and liked her but I can't help but to roll my eyes when she complains about adaptations. Well yeah. You wrote a weird ass story. Everyone talks like robots in a bland colorless world. A shirtless 12 year old boy has really lame wet dreams that would make even a Mormon giggle and gets frequent rubdowns from an old man. The moment the action picks up the book abruptly ends. How do you adapt that???
Buku bertema distopia masih jarang aku baca.
Membaca buku distopia memang memberikan kengerian tersendiri.

An amazing adaptation of my favorite book of all time. Superbly executed.
