I give this book a 3.5 rating. I really enjoyed the world building and found that the magical world of it was truly breathtaking. I loved getting lost in the lore and learning more about the many facets of the countries along with the main character. I also thought that the simmering darkness throughout the story was well used. The plot itself I found to be a well put together fantasy storyline. I do wish that there was a little more action in the story. Now that I finished it I realize that this story is mainly set up for another grander continuation of what happened here. I am definitely intrigued and am hopeful that there will be more action in the next volume. The few scenes of intense movement that did occur were very well written.

Absolutely loved the content and composition of this novel! Once I started I could not stop. The story was captivating and described perfectly to paint a vivid mental picture. I cannot wait to read about the next two years of Tarisai's life.

i struggled to get into this at first but omg what a great story!! just a lovely book with a beautifully executed feminist twist. amazing characters, however tarisai was a little annoying at the beginning, but she got a million times better as time went on. i loved the twist of her not falling for the prince but instead for the tough looking boy who is soft and squishy on the inside and doesnt want to hurt anyone. very good and will be reading the next one!!!

I enjoyed so much about this book. The magic system was very unique, the main cast of characters were really loveable and the story itself was fab.
The concept of the hallows and the ray are really interesting. Each of the council have their own power and they then become a source of immunity to a type of death for the emperor. It's a unique magic system and I hope it's explored even further in the second book.
I really like the development in Tarasei. I loved her relationship with Sanjeet from the very beginning so I was happy to see it flourish towards the end of the book, especially after he forgives her.
I think the only reason I couldn't give this a higher rating was the pacing of the end. Where the speed usually picks up towards the conclusion, this, at times, felt like it chugged. There were a few dream sequences that were lovely to see, but just slowed everything down and didn't serve the plot very much. Sanjeet's dream about his mother, for example, could easily have been earlier in the book and still had a similar impact, without dragging us away from the main plot.
