Collections of short stories that seemed to have a running theme of infidelity amongst marriages. It’s somewhat depressing to read that people almost NEED that distraction/excitement to reignite something deep within in the mundaneness of a marriage. Some of the stories are more intriguing and memorable than others. There is a lot of room for interpretation throughout these stories that I, unfortunately, don’t have the knowledge nor experience to completely understand their hidden meanings at times. I ended up researching more about each short stories after reading them then realizing I was missing some major ideas. I did enjoy the writing style and the titles of each story, which kept me on my toes trying to figure out why the whole time.

Har lyttet til lydboksingelen "Bjørnen gikk over fjellet" fra denne novellesamlingen. God og tankevekkende, men ikke oppsiktsvekkende.

I really enjoyed the prose, but the stories were not usually interesting enough to keep me enthralled.

All of the stories are centered around romantic and intimate relationships. Munro is marvelous at expressing the inner lives of her characters. The characters are layered, choosing what to reveal and what to conceal. They are recognizably human, conflicted and compromised. All of the relationships have troubles but none of them are monstrous; all of them develop in a plausible and recognizable manner. It feels like the characters have shared parts of themselves that they never would dare share with anyone. Fascinating and moving.

Book Riot Read Harder Task #2: Read one of your favorite author's favorite books.

I picked Franzen and found a list of books he loves via the interwebs. I'd heard of Munro but hadn't read her. Fantastic stories that capture the beauty and struggles of life.

The depths of character, full of everyday tragedy, are incredibly composed, masterfully executed. Each story brought me close to a fully formed world and lovingly detailed characters, that I've rarely experienced even in novels ten times the length. "Nettles" was my favorite here, though it's a favorite of favorites. A must read.

Each individual story was great and complex and full of interesting people and themes. I just wanted each story to be a book and not have to start anew with new characters every 20some pages. (this is why I don't like short stories in general)
