Junkyard Bargain is book two in the Shining Smith series, it is currently only available on audible, but it is scheduled for release in October. The action is picking up and we are learning more about all of the characters. I am really enjoying this series and am look forward to book three

You gotta Love Shining... Well I Love her, so you should too.

This is a great book 2 for this series, can't wait for book 3.

Just the cats alone make this book very entertaining!!!

Shining is ONE of a kind, and I Love it!!

The Shining Smith books are set in a dystopian future after a world destroying war. She lives in a world with giant mecha, crashed spaceships and battle suits. But perhaps the greatest weapon is her touch. She carries microscopic bots that transfer to others with a touch and then proceed to bend the persons will to serving her.

These audiobooks are short and carry the feel of the serialised radio-plays of the 1940s and '50s. They are well thought out and entertaining.

This is really a serial series with a furthering of the story in each and no major cliffhanger. It is a little frustrating as we want more, we want the romance that is hinted at, we want to know that they will shut down the other 2 queens from being able to enslave others, only we get how her knowledge of herself and her companies, the ones she worries about as thralls. This is all done as they fight and make alliances with competing factions.

SpoilerAs they pick up more information on the queen that keeps taking thralls and enslaving them, Heather/Silver discovers that her thralls aren’t as subservient as she thought they had to be to her. This is good but makes it so she is not always in charge. I think this happened because she needed not to be their masters and they figure this out and took the autonomy. She still fights her attraction to one but I think he already has a lot of autonomy, only his protectiveness is left as a impediment but she hasn’t figured this out yet.

So I really liked this furthering of the story though I might wait until it is much further along as it just didn’t feel like enough.

This second in the trilogy is a bit of a placeholder till the third comes along, setting up the action for the final novella.

The story has Shining and her crew of lots of cats and a few humans going to pick up a vital piece of equipment, fighting most of the way there and back. There’s a lot more world building here as the action isn’t confined to the junkyard. There’s less technobabble, making the story more accessible. And, as in the first book, the cats are just great.

There’s some serious stuff here, sex slaves and torture, betrayal and revenge. It may be too dark for some but I, for one, liked it and am eager for the third book to be published.

After reading Junkyard Cats, I could not wait for Junkyard Bargain – but boy was it worth the wait. I listened (because it’s currently available on Audible only – until fall), re-listened to Junkyard Cats (because I love Khristine Hvam’s narration), and listened to Junkyard Bargain again (just in case I missed something the first time ’round). And there’d be plenty to miss if you’re not paying attention.

Like Cupcake’s morphing from scared to take-charge. And thralls operating right under unsuspecting parents’ noses. As well as stealthy-in-the-night action that leaves bodies in its wake. Oh, wait, no – I noticed that the first go-round. Just like Junkyard Cats, there’s plenty of action in Junkyard Bargain, along with plenty of politicking and not enough of romancing. But there’s definitely plenty of bodies. Bad guys, every single one of them.

As Shining and her crew of cats and people gather what they’ll need to survive the war with Warhammer, they stir up the status quo and leave chaos in their wake. Whether that’s good or bad remains to be seen, as does whether she can truly trust those she’s now aligned herself with.

All in, Junkyard Bargain is a quick romp with cats, mechs, and more characters than I’m going to remember off the top of my head. This definitely felt like the middle of a story, as they prepare for the impending war, and there’s not a lot of character development – other than the AIs revealing more of themselves. I wonder where Shining’s thralls are heading with their independence, and I wonder if she’ll stop worrying/blaming herself for turning them. But I fully expect that when we get the next installment, Shining, cats, et al will stomp the stuffing out of Warhammer and her minions. Who’s with me?

Series: Junkyard Cats #2
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

Shining Smith and her crew are racing to gather weapons to take down their enemy and rescue one of their own. But the weapons gathering doesn’t go as planned for Shining and her crew.

This was another action packed adventure for Shining. As a fellow West Virginian I find this future of the state fascinating. I love this mesh of future technology, nanobots, aliens, and hive minds. In this one, we see more of what Shining can do with weapons, the cats, and of course her nanobots.

One of the things I really enjoyed about this book was all the secondary characters. Cookie is no longer a weak willed woman, she is becoming a badass who is highly organized. Jagger is back but isn’t the controlled man who left. Her relationship with Jagger is heartbreaking and I really can’t wait to see how the future will progress with them. And as always, I love the cats and her relationship with them.

I really can’t wait for the next book because I can’t wait for the big battle. Hopefully, we also get a resolution with Jagger because I really like him.
