I don’t understand why this book was written. There wasn’t a conflict left unresolved and the new didn’t add to make it better. Where were the editors to say this doesn’t feel genuine. Who in the 21st century doesn’t know the term firefighter not fire person? That just sounds like someone’s grandma is trying to be politically correct and missing the mark by a mile.

4.5 from me! Miss Flagg's books always put a smile on my face!
There is a certain feeling I get whenever I read a Fannie Flagg novel. It’s comfortable, it’s heartwarming, it can also be heartbreaking, but mostly, it feels like home.
This long time sought after follow up novel to Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, is all of those things and more.
There are more Idgie tales, more town news, follow ups on the townsfolk, and the generations that come after.
Bud Threadgoode is a lovable character that will stick with me for a long time. His daughter, Ruthie, is fantastic. But, the one who steals the show is Evelyn. It was so much fun to bask in all of her success!!
Beautiful book. Brought me to tears just thinking about Idgie and Ruth! 5 bright and shiny stars!

I wasn’t convinced in the beginning that this second book was necessary, but I was wrong. I underestimated this book. It was so nice to be back with some of these characters and see new stories unfold. They are so easy to connect and sympathize with even though I feel I have nothing in common with them. The second half is much better than the beginning, and that ending is badass. And again Flagg did an awesome job of balancing the sadness and happiness when presenting the realities of life.
I don't even care that it was a little disjointed and unbelievable because it was just a perfect sequel of insane wish fulfillment and a love letter to everyone who loved the first book.

this was cute. i really loved how it stressed the value of community, the preservation of memories/history, enjoying every day (especially as you age), and opening up to all the serendipitous possibilities life can offer. as a very nostalgic person, i loved that they rebuilt whistle stop.
i think the structure of this book felt much more disjointed than the first, especially as it didn’t seem to follow a set pattern with the different kinds of chapters. i also think it’s a real shame that we didn’t get to check in with any of the black characters from the first book (alberta comes back to run the cafe, but we don’t see any of her point of view ). there were no uncomfortable racial dynamics in this book, but that’s because there were basically no black characters. :-/

Good news is that it wasn’t racist like the first book. Bad news is that it’s a fairly simple sequel. Maybe it’s because the first book contained lots of plot twists and shocking events, and this one is more just following up on who’s left. It is pretty much exactly how you would expect a sequel that was published 30+ years later, or at least how I imagine it: a little late, a feel good memory, but nothing new or exciting.
This was not a good book. I was disappointed because I loved Fried Green Tomatoes (the book and the movie) and this is the follow up story. I have no idea how this got so many good reviews because the writing is very juvenile. There is not good flow - it is all over the place as far as timeline. It is convoluted and just felt tossed together to write another story about beloved characters. Fell flat.
